With temperatures soaring over 100 degrees here in South Texas, my boys and I have had to find some inside activities for the heat of the day this summer. We go to the pool around 9 am, then venture back out for trampoline and bikes in the evening. During the afternoons we are staying inside and trying to find new ways to entertain ourselves. Between movies, coloring, toys and video games we have done pretty well, but the boys wanted something new to try.

I searched around and found a game called Propel Man. It looked interesting, so we downloaded it and thus found this week’s Blue Plate Special. Let’s take a quick look.

HINTS
? Simple controls. Timing is the key.
? Hit the right angles, and watch the Propel Man fly!
? Use Rocket boosters strategically to fly farther and faster!

The idea behind Propel Man is simple. Load the catapult, pick the angle and send the character flying. He must land safely with a parachute in order to have a chance to finish each level. Basically, each level completed requires more distance to keep moving on. This is done by utilizing a series of power ups, perfect timing, a bit of strategy and some luck. Sometimes the luck is what actually sends your player across the line.

Tapping and hold the catapult to initiate the power sequence. You want to release when the power arrow is all the way to the bottom. Once the catapult is set, repeat to choose the angle the stuntman will be launched. The best angle is to the left of center. The first catapult will actually have a green area highlighted to help players learn the correct power and angles, but once upgraded it is your responsibility to choose what is best. When everything is set, the game will count down from three and off you go.

To continue beating levels it is important to upgrade your gear. Upgrades are available for the player, parachute and catapult. Each of these will help increase the distance the stuntman can fly. Pay special attention to when the next parachute or catapult is available so you do not spend extra coins to upgrade the current one for a level or two. I do recommend you always have a handful of rocket boosters available. While green and red jetpacks are scattered throughout each level, takes luck to hit them. You will need a controlled burst of speed to continue flight. Also make sure and pick up as many coins as possible each level to increase your buying power in the upgrade store. The only tip I can provide other than learning the power and angle maximum is to use the rocket boosters at the level just before the ground where the coins and boosters are located. It raises your chances of hitting the power ups. Also buy the laser suite and upgrade as it shoots down the billion dollar birds. Hit one of these birds and the stuntman tumbles to a not so great ending to the level.

Propel Man is an addicting little game that can be played over and over for long periods or just open for a quick game anytime. My boys have loved upgrading and seeing how far we can send the stuntman while dodging birds and hitting power ups. Timing is everything, so watch the power bar closely and check the altimeter so you maximize distance when opening the parachute. To get flying, check out Propel Man here in the app store. It is currently free (on sale from $.99).

What I Like: Addicting and simple gameplay that is fun for all ages.

What Needs Improvement: I wish the view of the stuntman was a little wider, so I could see when to use the rocket packs better.

We are all feeling the financial pinch! Blue Plate Special is a weekly review of bargain apps for the iPhone and iPod touch. Nothing over $.99.
