In this age of global shipping and corporate farming conglomerates, we like to think that dealing with seasons and shortages of anything is a thing of the past. But now the British National Pig Association issues a warning that I am sure is being met with great consternation at places like Epic Meal Time:

New data shows the European Union pig herd is declining at a significant rate, and this is a trend that is being mirrored around the world. Pig farmers have been plunged into loss by high pig-feed costs, caused by the global failure of maize and soya harvests. All main European pig-producing countries report shrinking sow herds.

But how will we continue to allow bacon-mania to wind up with bizarre combinations such as these?

That’s right, the impact of global weather patterns and particularly the U.S. drought that wreaked havoc with Soy and Corn crops has caused issues for pig farmers and forced them to reduce herds, which in turn will result in higher pork prices in general and a shortage of bacon!

But then again … maybe a little less bacon flowing through the arteries of our kids isn’t such a bad thing …
