Like many who ordered an iPhone 5 when they were first available, I didn’t have any kind of case, screen protector, or protective skin on hand when mine arrived. I did have a review sample of Dynaflo’s Liquid-Armor, however. Nano-coating tech? What’s that all about? I was ready to find out!

Included in the package are one 0.33 ounce bottle of Liquid-Armor fluid, an 8″ x 8″ microfiber cloth, and a second, smaller (bonus) microfiber cloth

My first thought was that this was just an overpriced screen cleaning system, and that any protection offered was going to be minimal, at best. After reading the application instructions, I wasn’t so sure; anything requiring 24 hours to fully “harden” had to be doing something, right?

I applied Liquid-Armor to my iPhone 5 and MacBook Pro. I knew that in the worst case scenario, my screens would at least be clean. I didn’t apply it to my iPad, because I already have a BodyGuardz protector in place.

I started by cleaning each screen thoroughly, and I used the larger microfiber cloth to remove all dust. Once the screens were completely clean, I sprayed a little bit of the Liquid-Armor on the smaller microfiber cloth, and I started wiping. As the instructions say, I did not use a circular motion — I keep all movements horizontal and vertical only. I coud see that the liquid being applied was a little but thicker than screen cleaners I’d used before, and it was a little more prone to streaking. I just kept applying and kept rubbing.

And in the end, I had a two very clean and slightly shinier screens. There were no bubbles on either of them, and I had no trapped dust (like might happen with a screen protector hastily applied).

But did I have the same protection that I would have had with a screen protector? I can’t say for sure, but I suspect not.

One of the side-benefits I’ve found to having a screen protector installed is that when the iPhone is dropped, the protector helps to spread the point of impact, which I suspect has kept me from shattering many a phone screen. Here there is no physical overlay, so that benefit doesn’t exist.

I’ve been using my iPhone with only the Liquid-Armor protection in place for the past few days, and while I can’t say that my screen is as protected as one with a protector installed would be, mainly because I can’t actually see that there is protection in place, nothing has scratched my screen. But then, I have also been very careful.

One thing I can attest to is that finger grease, dust, and other smudges are definitely lessened; for that alone, I think this product is on to something!

If you prefer to use your iPhone’s screen in the buff, then this product is one that you will likely love. If you are used to a screen protector, then this may all feel a little too “emperors new clothes” for you, but will definitely notice a difference in dust and smudge collection. That alone makes this a product worth trying.

What I Like: Included microfiber cloths are high quality, and they will be handy for all of my devices (and eyeglasses); doesn’t take much of the Liquid-Armor fluid to coat an entire screen properly; protection is supposed to last for up to six months, although it is recommended that you reapply every three months; I see a definite improvement in dust and smudge repelling — that alone makes this product worth it for me.

What Needs Improvement: I’m not sure that there is a way to KNOW that this is working
