We’ve looked at numerous iPad stands but few have been as simple and natural as this Desktop Chair from Moku Woodware. The Desktop Chair promises to “turn your laptop into a desktop”. Made from natural basswood, the Desktop Chair looks neat on its own and works well, except when it doesn’t. Let’s take a look.

The Desktop Chair is a simple stand. The wood is bent in such a manner that it looks interesting when it is not being used and it holds an iPad at a “nicely-reclined” angle when it is. I don’t love the fact that the stand is not adjustable but, fortunately, the company set the angle for decent viewing of video. Typing is a “no go” and if you are looking for a stand that works well for both viewing and typing, then you should look elsewhere.
Problems enter the picture when you use the stand with your iPad in portrait. You see, the design of the stand is such that it covers the home button. Sure, you can use multi-touch gestures or flip the iPad upside down but using an accessory that, from the start, requires workarounds is frustrating at best.
The story is better when is comes to using the Desktop Chair with a MacBook air. In this case you don’t need regular access to the keyboard and mouse since that is handled by a connected keyboard and mouse. The result is a sleek-looking setup that is sure to get attention. And don’t worry about the wood scratching the laptop’s finish, the Desktop Stand comes with padding that, when strategically placed, will keep the wood and metal from ever coming into contact.
