At this point, it’s pretty much trite to say that the best camera is the one you have with you, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t true. And as the cameras in phones have improved, the saying has become even truer. Here at CES 2013 Judie and I have large cameras; she is carrying a Cannon G11 and I have my Canon T3i, but we are also making good use of our iPhones for photos and pictures. Yes; the iPhone 5 is a phone that takes great pictures.
Samsung had a different idea. Sure; they put great cameras in phones, like the Samsung GALAXY S3, but they also wondered what would happen if they didn’t put a good camera in a phone- instead, putting a phone (or at least a phone operating system) into a camera. That’s what they did with the Samsung GALAXY Camera.
From the front, the Samsung GALAXY Camera looks like your standard Samsung point and shoot.
From the back, it does too. Yes; there is a large touchscreen display, but that isn’t all that uncommon these days and the controls that appear on the touchscreen are fairly standard for a 2013 point and shoot.
You can pick up the camera and start shooting, just as you would with any touchscreen point and shoot. However, that can change in seconds, to reveal a full Android operating system.
We spent a few minutes with the device and found it… Intriguing. My favorite feature? Voice control.
The GALAXY Camera does more than take great pictures. It also listens very, very well. By tuning in closely to what you are saying, the Galaxy Camera is able to execute your command.
