RAVPower was kind enough to send their latest RP-PB07 battery for review. Let’s take a look at it in terms of form and function.

Form:

This battery is simple in its design. It has a button on the front that allows you to check the current charge. On the back is the product label.  The bottom of the battery has 2 USB ports that allow you to charge any USB powered device. One port provides up to 2.0 Amps of current. The other provides 1 Amp. The RP-PB07 ships with 2 short MicroUSB cables, a velvet carrying case and a USB charger. If you use an iOS device you will have to provide your own 30-pin or Lightning cable.

Function

The 2 Amp port will charge an iPad. I was also able to get it to charge my Asus EeePad. It’s nice that this battery can charge  tablets but it’s important to note that if your iPad or tablet is bottomed out, this battery probably won’t be enough to get it back to 100 percent. For example, the iPad 4 can be brought up to about 80 percent charge from this battery.

The 1 amp port is enough for most phones and other small devices. It will charge my Galaxy Nexus, and I tested it with an iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, my Motorola S10-HD Blutooth Headphones and a few other USB peripherals. I tested my Galaxy Nexus with this battery extensively, and I was able to charge my Galaxy Nexus extended battery from 10 percent (or lower) all the way back up to 100 percent at least 4 times.  Obviously I should be able to top off many more times than 4 thanks to the 10400 Amp Hour capacity of this battery. Needless to say, I don’t think I will EVER run out of juice at Ohio Linuxfest this year. In fact, I may be able to help recharge a few other people during the conference as well.

Recharging this battery takes a long time with its charger — between 8 and 12 hours to charge from empty.  If you plug it in at the end of the day with a partial charge, it should be recharged by the time you wake up.

Conclusion

If you need to keep your devices charged on the go I highly recommend this battery.  The RP-PB07 is always in my bag as I never know when my phone will give up the ghost.  Until phones get true all day battery life with lots of usage one of these batteries will always be in my bag.  Plus at the great price of only $37.99 with free shipping for Prime members, the battery is a definite buy for those wanting to keep their phone going.  In fact, I am going to get my wife her OWN before our next trip so that I don’t have to share! 🙂

MSRP: $34.99

What I liked: Compact form factor. Enough capacity to charge my daily driver 4 times.

What needs improvement: I kind of feel guilty saying this, but I’d like one in the same size, but with a bigger capacity. Other than that nothing.
