ECOROX Waterproof Speaker

Like the elusive Loch ness monster, the search for a Bluetooth speaker that is fully waterproof and actually sounds decent has endured, but an actual sighting has long-eluded those seeking to capture it in the flesh. Finally however ECOXGEAR’s ECOROX waterproof speaker has reared its head. It is waterproof and it sounds good.

ECOROX Waterproof Speaker

ECOXGEAR describes their ECOROX speaker as “a unique portable audio system combining Bluetooth, Lithium Ion Battery and Waterproof Technologies”. It has an MSRP of just under $130 and, thanks to its rugged design, looks the part of a speaker built for the outdoors. The ECOROX is shock resistant, waterproof and it even floats. Packed with just enough features the rechargeable wireless speaker lets you stream music from any Bluetooth-enabled device and even take calls thanks to its speakerphone abilities. Here’s our video look.

As you can see the ECOROX is a capable little speaker. Certified IPX7 Waterproof, it is fully submersible. That’s right, there won’t be any splashproof nonsense here. We’re talking, “Take the speaker, throw it in the water, be amazed it floats, grab it up and continue to enjoy your music.” This speaker is built to be used… and abused.

  • USB Charging Cable
  • Carabiner Clip
  • User Guide

The top of the speaker has sealed physical controls. These include Power, Bluetooth Pairing, Volume Up, Volume Down and Play/Pause/Answer Phone. I love the fact that, for simplicity, the Power and Bluetooth button are activated by a single press rather than the usual “Press and hold”.

Pulling back the rubber door on the back reveals the microUSB charging port and a 3.5mm Aux-In port. Since this is designed to be used on the go I like the fact that they kept the speaker’s complexity to a minimum.

Dimensions:

  • Height: 2.5?
  • Width: 5.3?
  • Depth: 3?
  • Weight: 11 oz

Rounding out the speaker’s “outdoor, use-everywhere” credentials are a carabiner clip and a standard ¼ 20” camera screw post. Yes, this is a speaker you can hang from your belt, mount on a tripod or toss in a boat. And thanks to the 1800mAh Lithium Rechargeable battery you can expect up to 10 hours of play or talk time.

When it comes to sound this little speaker packs a punch thanks to 6 watt Stereo Speakers and a Top Mounted Bass Radiator. The ECOROX is about the size you would expect it to be and it gets a good bit louder than you might otherwise think. Volume without good sound won’t cut it these days though — even when taking the fact that the speaker is truly waterproof into account. The good news is… this speaker sounds pretty darn good! It offers good bass, especially  for something as small as this and it doesn’t distort until it gets toward the top of its volume. The sound is, however rather directional. That means you’ll get the best sound if you are directly in front of the speaker grill. It’s not a problem but it is something about which you will want to be aware since this speaker won’t fill a room with 360 sound the way some similarly priced Bluetooth speakers will.

ECOROX Waterproof Speaker

If I were looking for a speaker based purely on sound I’m not sure this would be my first choice but the fact that it offers good sound and is truly waterproof puts it into a league of its own. As I wrote at the beginning of this post I’ve long wanted a speaker that was waterproof and could, for example, be used in the shower. I tried one of the dedicated shower speaker/radios a few months ago but was unimpressed with the build and the sound. That’s far from the case here. The ECOROX is solidly built, offers all the functionality you expect from a small Bluetooth speaker, is waterproof and even floats. Best of all it sounds good. At just $129.99 it is one tough little speaker that can actually let you bring your tunes pretty much anywhere.

MSRP: $129.99

What I Like: Truly rugged speaker that is waterproof and floats; Speaker and speakerphone that gets 10 hours per charge; Carabiner  and tripod mount for hanging and mounting

What Needs Improvement: Sound is much better directly in front of the speaker
