phonebloks

Phonebloks is a conceptual solution to a very real problem.  Electronic waste is a big concern, as today’s electronics are not built to last.  Phonebloks is a concept that uses interchangeable “bloks” that can be switched out when it either fails or you’re in the mood for an upgrade.  But can this seemingly simple idea really be produced?

With this design, you can theoretically just swap in and out any number of components from the camera, processor, gyroscope, memory, WiFi, even the screen and replace them wherever you’d like on the base.  Sounds like an incredibly simple way to fully customize your phone and ensure that your phone will never become outdated.  But how realistic is it?

The first warning sign in my mind while watching the video above was this quote, “If your phone is getting a little slow, you can just upgrade the blok that effects the speed.”  Now, I’m no electrical engineer, but that just does not seem to be how electronics work.  My first thought was what a nightmare the electronics would be to develop on this.  But think about it this way, where would we be today if no one had fantastic dreams of future gadgets?  So dream on, Dave Hakkens; I’d love to see where this goes.

Although the Phonebloks website was down due to the extreme traffic it received today, you can still show your support for Phonebloks by heading over to Thunderclap and sharing.  And be sure to let us know what you think, below.
