Video Game Logic

Every time there’s a tragic school shooting or mass killing, we hear about video games. We hear that they’re ‘killing trainers’ and need to be regulated and controlled because they are dangerous and poisoning the minds of our youth. Studies show all violent media consumption desensitizes us, but that is very different than making us killers, as the image shows.

I have loved technology for as long as I can remember - and have been a computer gamer since the PDP-10! Mobile Technology has played a major role in my life - I have used an electronic companion since the HP95LX more than 20 years ago, and have been a 'Laptop First' person since my Compaq LTE Lite 3/20 and Powerbook 170 back in 1991! As an avid gamer and gadget-junkie I was constantly asked for my opinions on new technology, which led to writing small blurbs ... and eventually becoming a reviewer many years ago. My family is my biggest priority in life, and they alternate between loving and tolerating my gaming and gadget hobbies ... but ultimately benefits from the addition of technology to our lives!

  1. I’ve long thought that video game violence was a non-issue, but I never liked the particular line of argument pushed by the image macro you have there. So let me play devil’s advocate for a moment.

If Madden 25 were successful in molding you into the psychological spitting image of Peyton Manning or Reggie Bush, you would still have to overcome the barrier of whipping yourself into pro-level physical shape and then making it past an NFL regional combine

If Surgeon Simulator 2013 were successful in molding you into the psychological spitting image of Sanjay Gupta or Peter Benton (okay, he’s fictional, but famous doctors are sadly few and far between), you would still have to overcome the barrier of four years of medical school, internship, the boards, four to seven years of residency, and a fellowship.

If Gyakuten Saiban were successful in molding you into the psychological spitting image of Clarence Darrow or Alan Dershowitz, you would still have to overcome the barrier of three years of law school, the bar, and actually finding employment (and I’m only half-joking about that second part).

If Cooking Mama were successful in molding you into the psychological spitting image of Mario Batali or Julia Child, you would still have to overcome the barrier of rising through all the ranks of a professional kitchen: from apprentice through all the various sections to line cook to sous-chef to head chef.

If GTA V were successful in molding you into the psychological spitting image of Seung-Hui Cho or Adam Lanza, you would still have to overcome the barrier of passing a background check (optional if you go the private dealer route at gun shows), buying guns, learning how to load magazines, learning how to reload guns, and learning how to operate a safety (optional if you’re using an older Glock).

“One of these things is not like the others…”
