The two layer approach of the Speck CandyShell does a decent job of protecting your iPhone and looks quite nice in the process. Sure the shiny surface of the hard exterior layer can get as scratched as a Gobstopper that’s been rolling around on sandpaper, but better your case than your phone, right? By adding a faceplate to the design, Speck takes the CandyShell to an entirely new level. No, it doesn’t turn the CandyShell into something like an OtterBox Defender or a LifeProof Fre, but it does do a good bit to help keep your iPhone looking pristine.

Quick and easy application. The faceplate can also be easily removed for cleaning and reuse.

Added protection: Rubberized covers shield volume and power buttons while keeping them fully accessible.

The faceplate of the Speck CandyShell, referred to as the CandyShield (isn’t that a cute name for it?), features what the company is calling “TrueTap technology”. This means the faceplate actually bonds directly to the screen. This makes it easy to apply and lets the screen remains highly sensitive to touch. Speck made sure the opening for the Home button was large enough to allow Apple’s Touch ID fingerprint sensor to work properly.

I’ve never been a huge fan of the CandyShell design, but I see tons of people using them on their phones. The cases look nice and offer a good amount of protection. This new offering adds a layer of protection for the screen and, by so doing, ups the overall value of this design. If you love the look and feel of an iPhone wrapped in a Speck CandyShell case you can’t go wrong.

MSRP: $44.95

What I Like: Nice, bright colors; Two layers of protection; Bottom of the case no longer has long, thin runs of case material that easily tore on previous models; Faceplate offers close to 360 degree protection.

What Needs Improvement: CandyShell cases can look pretty scratched up over time
