Evutec Wood S Series Case for iPhone 5S Review – Kevlar & Bamboo Protection

Gear Diary Evotech for iPhone 037

If you are a fan of wood iPhone cases, but don’t love the fact that they can be rather delicate and/or have sharp edges, then you are going to love the Evutec Wood S Series for iPhone 5S. It has the look and feel of bamboo, but it’s actually a composite material; best of all, it is under $40.

The case looks and feels as if it is all natural, but it is actually made from a composite that layers bamboo with DuPont Kevlar. You know – Kevlar – the material used to stop bullets and shrapnel!! The result of the process is something that is light and yet incredibly strong and durable. That’s a particularly good thing since it takes some finesse and a bit of bending of the case to get an iPhone 5S into and out of it. I was, in fact, initially hesitant to put as much muscle into getting the case on my iPhone as I feared I would snap it in two. The Kevlar does it’s job however, and where other bamboo-only cases would have snap, this one remained solid and in tact.

The case fits like a second skin around the iPhone. It is light enough that it doesn’t add significant weight and is thin enough that it doesn’t add too much bulk. That is, however, a mixed blessing since it also means this case is more about scratch protection, and it is drop protection. Yes, this case isn’t going to compete for durability with something like a Lifeproof case, but it will keep your iPhone looking pristine and add some visual interest in the process.

I was a bit bummed to discover that no screen protector or similar extras work included with the case. Still, it is under $40, so including additional items would have him over the top at this price point.

The bottom line is this: if you are the purest who loves all natural cases this isn’t going to be the case for. If you like the look and feel of wood bamboo, but don’t like the delicate nature of such natural materials, then you will love this case.

If you are prone to dropping your iPhone, then this isn’t the case for you. If, on the other hand, you are looking for something that will add visual interest and scratch protection, and you aren’t a klutz, then this case will be quite appropriate for you, and you will love it.
