We recently took a look at the SanDisk Connect Wireless Flash Drive. It is a great accessory but one that is not without its flaws. The good news is that its big brother, the SanDisk Connect Wireless Media Drive, answers many of those shortcomings. It is a simple way to add 32 or 64GB of storage on the go!
The media drive comes in two capacities but has a full-size SD slot so you can add even more storage capacity if the 64GB isn’t enough. A small, solid accessory it is simple to get up and running and is ideal for anyone whose phone or tablet lacks expandable storage. (Yeah, in 2014 we are STILL speaking to you Apple!) Here’s what SanDisk has to say about it:
Ideal for family vacations and rainy days, the Wireless Media Drive is the perfect pocket-sized entertainment device that streams high-definition movies, photos, and music on tablets, smartphones, and computers. It also includes an SDHC/SDXC card slot for instant sharing of those awesome birthday pictures and videos you just took on your digital camera with friends and family.** And with up to 8 hours of continuous streaming per charge, it will keep the whole family entertained longer.
What struck me almost as much as the ease-of-use I discovered with the SanDisk Connect Wireless Media Drive is how solid and “elegant” it is. While the Wireless Flash Drive looked like an oversized flash drive the Media Drive, which measures 2.6” x 2.6” x .52” has a look and feel that is… impressive. I would even go so far as to call it “jewelry-esque”. This is due, in large part, to the aluminum exterior housing and non-slip rubber bottom.
The free SanDisk Wireless Media Drive App is available through the iTunes App Store, Google Play or the Amazon App Store. Setting it up was simple thanks to the onscreen step-by-step instructions. Within minutes I was able to access files on the SD card I had slipped into the drive. I like the simplicity since having to fuss with settings and setup on-the-go quickly makes any mobile accessory unusable.
The Media Drive was able to access cards slipped into this SD card slot that my 32GB Wireless Flash Drive could not. That alone makes the Media Drive the better choice. And while the Wireless Flash Drive connects to a computer for charging And file transfer using the built-in USB port while the Media Drive requires a separate cable, the tradeoff of greater format flexibility and longer runtime is one that makes perfect sense.
In other words, if you are looking to add capacity and sharing to your phone or tablet and are considering one of SanDisk’s products I strongly recommend the SanDisk Connect Wireless Media Drive. Considering they cost the same it is an easy and clear choice.
