Judie is headed to Berlin next week as Intel’s guest for IFA; while there, I’m sure she’s going to see a ton of great new kit. I for one am looking forward to reading her posts. Of all of the new products that will be announced, I think we’re both looking forward to the new Sony Xperia devices the most. You see, over the last few months Sony has really won the two of us over thanks to the big, powerful mobile devices.
Here’s a quick rundown of the current Sony gear we are using: Both Judie and I have the Sony Xperia Z2. It is a big beautiful phone and, as both of us find ourselves saying repeatedly, it is the best phone either of us have ever used. This afternoon I saw my niece and nephew, and they freaked out when I threw my phone in the pool. They didn’t know it was waterproof. I have it in black, and Judie has it in purple. Judie has the huge Sony Xperia Ultra phablet as well; I had one but sold it last week. She prefers using the Ultra as her daily phone because it can also replace her tablet, but when she travels she prefers the Z2, as it is more pocketable. I also have the Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet; it is amazingly thin, remarkably fast, and it has an absolutely beautiful screen. Judie and I aren’t sure how we both suddenly became so invested in the Sony ecosystem, but we well … we are.
Now Sony has teased that they will be releasing three new products during their September 3 Press Conference. As far as we can tell, the event will see the announcement of the long rumored Z3 – the third-generation of their flagship phone in less than 12 months – a smaller version of it called the Z3 Compact and the Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet compact.
Unless there is something incredible about the new version of our current smartphone, neither Judie nor I will be upgrading to the Z3. After all, the Z2 has plenty of power, and it will remain at the top of the smartphone heap for the foreseeable future. I do, however, expect that I will want the tablet compact. We don’t have any details, but my guess is that it will strike a nice sweet-spot between the ultra and their current tablet. For me, the Ultra is a bit too big to be a phone and not quite large enough to serve as a tablet. My current tablet is beautiful, but it’s rather large. Something that falls between the two would be absolutely amazing. Judie is hoping that the tablet compact might be an updated Ultra, even if that’s a long shot. I can’t wait to see the reveal, and I wish that I was was going to be there rather than Judie. Then again, having her there is certainly the next best thing for me
