Ghostbusters Renaissance with Fruit Ninja and a Potential New Movie!

Remember Fruit Ninja? That oddly zen game of thwacking fruit that we all got hooked on in the early days of iOS? Well there’s something strange in the Fruit Ninja Dojo…guess it’s time to call Ghostbusters! Of course, do you call the Famous Original Ghostbusters ,or the future rebooted all-women Ghostbusters? It’s a Ghostbusters renaissance! (A ghostaissance? A renaibust?)

First, prepare to feel very old: it’s been 30 YEARS since Ghostbusters was released. On the upside, it’s still as amazing now as it was then. And the music is still quite catchy. Admit it, you’re currently humming the theme song as you read this. And if you aren’t yet, here it is for your listening pleasure:

Apparently the folks behind Fruit Ninja are big Ghostbusters fans, and they’ve rethemed the game to celebrate the movie, with a special Ghostbusters Dojo referencing the haunted subway from Ghostbusters 2. They’ve also included an awesome Ghostbusters blade that lets you “cross the streams” once per game to make a super-destructive fruitsplosion. The fruit even glows like it was soaked in ectoplasm! And, as always, there are tons of Ghostbusters related puns between games. It doesn’t change gameplay, but it does make a fairly basic game more visually appealing!

Of course, the big news in Ghostbusters world broke last week: THERE IS ANOTHER MOVIE COMING! No details really, except that it is being spearheaded by the team behind “Bridesmaids” and “The Heat”, and now I really want to see a Ghostbusters movie starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, and Sandra Bullock. I would also accept Maya Rudolph as a substitute for any of those three. Yes, the original is an absolute classic, and I don’t want to see a shot for shot reboot…but I think in the right comedy hands there is a great deal of humor to be mined from the concept of Ghostbusters, and if it’s a showcase for some of the most talented female comedic actresses today, even better!

Sadly, this probably means the fantasy casting my coworker and I drew up one day will probably never happen. But on the off-chance any of our readers win the lottery and have money to burn, please consider investing in our version of a Ghostbusters reboot: Recast the entire movie using the cast of “Arrested Development”. Buster Bluth as Egon! Gob Bluth as Peter Venkman! Tobias as Louis (and Lindsay as Dana/Zuul, natch). Netflix, are you listening? This could be the theme for Arrested Development Season 5!

Anyhow, it’s a good time to be a Ghostbusters fan. How do you feel about the new movie? Are you still playing Fruit Ninja enough to notice the new theme?
