Some vehicle models just seem to come around often here in the GearDiary test driveway, and the Nissan Titan pickup seems to be one of them. I drove it when it first launched more than a decade ago, punished it on a wet off-road track in North Texas and most recently saw my third Titan in the past five years.

Titan is probably the longest running model from any manufacturer that has not changed much since it launched. It arrived around the same time another Japanese automaker was bringing a fullsize pickup to market to compete with Detroit but Nissan offered the fewest engine choices and body packages of all the competitors.

All that is being promised to change soon as a new Titan is said to bow at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit this January and with it, a new Cummins powertrain.

In the meantime, I will tell you a little about some cool new conveniences in the current truck along with a project Nissan just completed in partnership with The Wounded Warrior Project.

Project Titan

Nissan put two Wounded Warrior Project alumni behind the wheel of a crowd-sourced 2014 Titan PRO-4X pickup for a 10-day adventure through the Last Frontier State, Alaska. Project Titan saw David Guzman and Kevin McMahon trek their way through harsh weather conditions, difficult terrain and a host of obstacles throughout the expedition and the entire event was documented by Nissan for a special YouTube series set to launch this fall.

Titan PRO-4X

Our most recent tester arrived in the rugged PRO-4X trim package in Crew Cab configuration. All Nissan Titan pickups are powered by a 317hp 5.6-liter V-8 engine that generates 385 lb. ft. of torque that is backed by a five-speed automatic transmission. Trucks with 4WD offer shift-on-the-fly with the electronic control part-time transfer case and 4×2 and 4×4 owners get an Active Brake Limited-Slip Differential as standard equipment.

Titans arrive in King or Crew Cab form in S, SV, PRO-4X and SL trim levels and ride on 18- or 20-inch wheels and tires depending on the package ordered. Two wheelbases (139.8 inches and 159.5 inches) and three bed lengths (79.1-inch King Cab and 67.3-inch Crew Cab and new 87-inch Crew Cab SV) are also amongst the short list of variations in Titan. This tester came with the 5 ft. 7 in. cargo box that offered some new features in the Utili-Track cargo system. Most notably was the removable tailgate extender that also slides fore and aft in its rails for unlimited cargo storage options.

Fuel economy rolls in at a mere 12 mpg city and 17 mpg highway with pricing for this loaded 2014 Nissan Titan 4×4 PRO-4X coming in at $45,555 along with a few add-ons including Rockford Fosgate premium audio system and Nissan Navigation system.
