Every once in a while we get the chance to review something “old school,” something that doesn’t plug in or use the latest operating system on a smart device. This weekend I got my chance to sample a delightful treat that was scary at first but quite the surprise – Ghost Pepper Honey from Geddes Farms.

Some of you may be familiar with the infamous ghost pepper, one of the world’s hottest chili peppers rated at more than a million Scoville heat units. It has made many a daring gourmet turn instantly to tears and large glasses of milk for relief. I was hesitant at first, wanting to dare my son-in-law at first (he has the iron-clad stomach), but I mustered the courage.

Opening the lid and seeing that ghost pepper that is inside each jar staring back at you is a bit intimidating but I forged on. First, a dip of the end of a spoon. Mmmm, honey – sweet, sweet, natural honey. But wait, I am not tearing up and my tongue has not burst into flames. Another taste, this time with the business end of the spoon and a bit more product into my mouth. OK, after the sweetness slowly disappears there is something grabbing the back of my throat, the recognizable sign of my body’s reaction to the pepper.

No beads of sweat on my forehead and the heat goes away quickly as this jar of honey beckons my name again. It is a perfect blend of sweet and heat, and just like the famous potato chips you can’t have just one. I have to hand it to the folks at Geddes Farms, as they probably sacrificed a lot of taste buds getting this recipe blend just right before putting the Ghost Pepper Honey on the market. This is yum done right. And all natural and from sustainable sources.

I was thinking of ways to utilize this Ghost Pepper Honey into recipes, and Geddes Farms recommends drizzling over wings or glazing meats or even blending into your favorite brownie mix, but save some for hot toddies when the weather begins turning colder this winter, or perhaps a little dollop into your morning coffee to get your day kicked off right. The Ghost Pepper Honey might just be the cure for what ails ya.
