It’s official, we’re living in the future. Not only is virtual reality quickly becoming everyday reality, but now you can wear a heads-up display while you’re riding a bike, literally seeing your ride statistics floating in front of you like a biking terminator. That’s the future that Solos Smart Eyewear is promising!
Solos are sunglasses with a “pupil scale display” that lets you “see” a projection of information in front of you. Sort of like Google Glass, but with a much more specific focus: giving you all your biking statistics, from heart rate to distance to cadence, all without taking your eyes off the road. Many cyclists use bike computers or mount a smartphone on their handlebars, but the Solos Smart Eyewear takes that to the next level. In addition to all the display options, there’s also built in microphones so you can take calls on the ride (or chat with Siri/Google Now/Cortana if you get lonely).
Solos didn’t just slap a heads-up display on a pair of sunglasses though. They say they tested the eyewear in wind tunnels so they could design the glasses with the least amount of drag, there are interchangable lenses for the best tinting for your ride, and the frames are built to stand up to wind and flying road debris. What really sounds intriguing is their “Whisper” technology, which allows you to talk into the microphone, as well as hear voice prompts, even in windy environments. Battery life is also supposedly quite good at 10 hours, which is a generous amount of time for most riders.
