If you’re looking for a sturdy, but functional laundry hamper that won’t scream “college” (even if you’re in college) but is minimalistic enough to get the job done, you need to check out simplehuman’s Steel X-Frame Laundry Hamper.

Available in a single($80) or a double ($100), I got the double, mainly to sort my lights from my darks. Now I know, why would you pay close to a hundred bucks for a laundry hamper. Now before you judge me, let me just be the one to show you.

This is the cheap hamper that I purchased at Target four years for around $20. While it’s great if you want to just toss all your clothes and drag it across the room, it’s not completely functional. It not only doesn’t have wheels, but it’s just hideous to look at. And while simplehuman’s Laundry Hamper does not have wheels, it still manages to transport in style. Made up of breathable canvas and mesh bags, the Steel X-Frame hamper simply gets it done for me. The heavy-duty hamper can comfortably sit in the corner of your closet or in the corner of your room without looking overtly distracting. The X-Frame itself is a solid steel (obviously) which adds a bit of elegance to the tan and brown which goes great for home décor, to the point it matched my bedroom set enough to leave it sitting out in the open. One thing that I wish that the hamper did have through was wheels so I could actually drag the entire thing across my living room floor towards my washer & dryer.

When washing clothes though I did notice when you take out one of the bags if you have a double that the X-Frame itself doesn’t completely stand up all of the way without effort. While it’s not a huge deal considering you’re emptying one of its two functional compartments, it’s reminiscent of taking one battery our a remote. It won’t function correctly without its partner. As a fan of the color, I do wish there were more, more specifically a black and white, to differentiate colors, especially if you have children to signify which basket for what, but that’s obviously nothing to worry about.

To be completely honest, $100 is a lot of cash to fork out for a hamper, but its overall functionality is worth buying four or five of those hampers I listed above, and if it were not for it not having wheels to transport, it would easily outduel those Rubbermaid ones Target sells in terms of portability. At the end of the day, outside of wheels, and maybe being a tad bit taller in size to compensate for someone who changes clothes two, possibly three times a day (work, gym, etc.) this is an excellent, expensive hamper than once you get over the fact you’ve paid the price, you know you will get your money’s worth over time. And with simplehuman’s rock solid return policy, you can easily exchange if there’s a complaint. Let me be a testament of breaking a Rubbermaid hamper, (and others), and having to fork over more money because the clothes I stuffed in it simply broke the plastic material.
