We’re going to get this out of the way at the start: Mokase is a terrible idea. Truly awful. I want to believe it’s a joke, or the punchline to a bad joke, but it is real…someone sat down and designed a phone case that brews coffee. And it comes with a little keychain sized portable cup, because of course it does.

There’s a number of reasons why this is a terrible idea, but let’s start by looking at the actual concept. From the Kickstarter (note that the creators are Italian and it looks like the English was run through a translator):

Mokase is the first multi-utility cover that supplies espresso coffee whenever and wherever you want with a simple system of disposable wafer makes your smartphone unique!

It will be surely happened to wish a good cup of coffee, but to have no time to stop at the usual bar… imagine to be in a means of transport leading you to work, or while you’re going to pick up your children after the school, in the middle of a work meeting, in short into one of many frenetic moments of the day. It’s right this wish that pushed us to think about a system to obtain our coffee! How to make it always available? Why not join it to a gadget that is already a piece of our lifetime?… the smartphone is the answer. I’m going to meet my friends, I tell them about the idea and from here everything starts. At the end we turned out well and the cover Mokase was born!

I also strongly encourage you to watch their video, which asks you to accept a scenario where a young man attempts to hit on a woman by brewing her coffee from his phone on a street corner. Kids, please do not accept liquids from strangers’ phones on street corners.

First of all, I can’t imagine a situation in which I would whip out my phone in a meeting and start brewing coffee from it, unless I really wanted the meeting to end immediately. Second of all, coffee is probably one of the most ubiquitous food items you can buy. Everyone has coffee, from 7-11 to a high end hotel, not to mention the network of drive-thru options. Basically, no, I’ve never been suddenly struck with the need for coffee so badly that I thought “if only I could consume liquid heated and poured through my phone case, yes, the one that sits in my pocket, on my desk, and on bathroom sinks.”

Second of all, there’s almost no way you’re getting a decent cup of coffee out of this, let alone espresso. Espresso is made by forcing hot water through freshly ground coffee at extremely high pressure. Anyone who has worked as a barista can tell you that the harder you tamp down the grinds, the thicker and richer the espresso will be. This thing is apparently reheating packets of espresso and piping them out of a hole in your phone case, so the best scenario is that you’re getting old reheated espresso. More likely, you’re getting something that makes Quick Check look gourmet.

Also, 30 Rock already addressed where to get coffee:

If, and I still think that’s a big if, this is a legitimate product, the designers should be applauded for their engineering creativity. However, this is an abomination that should never have been invented. To quote Jeff Goldblum in Jurassic Park: “Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.”
