A few years ago, I was using a MacBook Air as my main computer and drinking a glass of Crystal Lite. (I have since switched to… water.) One second all was well, and the next… my MacBook Air was filled with sticky fake lemonade. That would NEVER have happened had I been using a Mighty Mug. It is quite remarkable!

When the Mighty Mug was pitched to us for coverage I was a bit skeptical. They claimed the mug, or glass (they offer a range of drinking vessels which all include the same technology) can be pushed, bumped, knocked, jammed, rocked or even shot and not tumble over. But, and this is what makes the Mighty Mug different, when you go to pick up the glass or mug it lifts in the same way any other mug or glass would. I figured there must be a suction cup on the bottom that grabs hold of a flat surface and keeps the vessel in place. If, however, that were the case, one would need to hit a release button in order to release the suction and pick it up from the surface. That sounded pretty cumbersome to me and I had a feeling this would be one of those products I would end up dishing on. (Pun very much intended.)

I received samples of two Mighty Mug products, the Mighty Mug Go Red and the Mighty Mug Ice.

Mighty Mug Go Red

I unboxed both and set them on our countertop.

Mighty Mug Ice Blue

I pushed on both. Neither moved. I pushed harder. Same result. Then I grabbed hold of the Mighty Mug Ice and picked it up. It lifted as if it were a traditional glass. I grabbed the Mighty Mug Red Go and lifted it up. The result was the same. I turned each over and took a closer look at the bottom. Somehow, as if by magic, the creators of the Mighty Mug found a way to create a mug base that immediately creates a vacuum when placed on a smooth surface but releases its grip when the mug if lifted vertically. When you push on the mug from the side it only makes the vacuum stronger. That, in turn, means the mug won’t tip over and spill.

When, however, you lift the mug as you would when picking up anything filled with liquid, it releases so quickly and easily that you don’t even notice the unusual design. As they explain it, when you lift the mug vertically the “pressure is instantly normalized, ” and the mug is released from the surface.

The “trick” us the Smartgrip Technology found on the bottom.

The Smartgrip Technology may look simple, but I still don’t fully get how it works!

This promo video will give you a better sense of what the Mighty Mug line of products is all about.

Mighty Mug Go Red

Here’s what Mighty Mug has to say about the 16-ounce Mighty Mug Go Red:

Mighty Mug is powered by our innovative and patented Smartgrip Technology. Simply place Mighty Mug down on your desk and it creates a powerful airlock which allows Mighty Mug to resist accidental knocks to help avoid spills. When you lift Mighty Mug the pressure is instantly normalized allowing the airlock to release and Mighty Mug to lift naturally. You need to try it to believe it.

I have car mugs galore but none quite like this. Not only does it hold a full 16 ounces and keeps hot beverages hot for a long time but the lid has a drink-through area that locks down and actually works to keep hot liquids from splashing around if you hit a bump.

It features:

Smartgrip technology grips when you accidentally knock it; it lifts naturally, and never wears out

  • Is BPA Free
  • Is car cup holder friendly
  • Is dishwasher safe
  • 100% Happiness Guaranteed Policy
  • 16oz

It comes in other colors as well. You can check it, and its siblings out here.

Mighty Mug Ice

To my mind the Mighty Mug Ice is the more interesting of the two review samples I was sent. Since it is summer, I am more likely than usual to keep ice water or a cold drink with me all the time. The good news is that this mug might look like it is for cold beverages but it can be used with hot ones as well.

The Mighty Mug Ice has a 20 ounce capacity and offers double wall construction that helps keep cool drinks cool. More than that, The Mighty Mug Ice can be used without the cover, with the cover’s flip top that let’s you sip normally while also sealing it closed, or with the included straw.

The straw even locks down in the lid so it won’t flop around.

Here’s what the company has to say about it:

Mighty Mug Ice brings its innovative spill-free mug design to your cool summer drinks. With a double wall construction and patented Smartgrip™ Technology, this tumbler will keep your hands dry and your beverages chilled. With a double wall construction and patented Smartgrip Technology, Mighty Mug Ice keeps your drinks chilled while resisting accidental spills.

Features:

  • Smartgrip’s powerful airlock design grips any surface to avoid getting knocked over
  • Pressure is instantly normalized when lifting naturally
  • 20 oz. capacity mug
  • Constructed of durable Tritan plastic
  • BPA free
  • Dishwasher safe

It is just $19.99 and is available in a number of colors. Check it out here.

I came into this review a bit skeptical of the product. Having once destroyed my MacBook Air with an artificially flavored drink, I liked the idea that it couldn’t be knocked over. I could not, however, imagine how the mug or glass could create suction with a surface as soon as it was placed down but instantly release the suction when it is lifted normally. Much to my surprise that is exactly what the Mighty Mug does. Place it down and it won’t fall over even when hit fairly hard from the side. Lift it vertically and you won’t even notice there is anything unusual about it. Yes, the Might Mug is one of those innovative products that delivers exactly what it promises. And now that the company has expanded their line to include a range of barware, there’s no excuse for destroying your rug… or precious electronics, when clumsy cousin Sarah comes for a visit. Check out the entire line here.

What Needs Improvement: Nothing — This is one of the more surprising products I have reviewed in recent memory
