On Friday the 13th, I had the opportunity to attend an event at the New York Film Festival. Rather than being your typical movie premiere, I was treated to six short films created by emerging NYC filmmakers — ranging from thriller to docu-style — all had been shot on the LG V30.

The six V30 short films and their creators were:

Which was your favorite? I liked them all, but “Tagged”, “The Spectacular Tito Garcia”, and “She Was Afraid to Fly” in particular; the latter left me a little bit teary (not gonna lie).

After the screening, Bilge Ebiri, a New York journalist and film critic at the Village Voice, hosted a panel with the filmmakers. It was fascinating to hear about their individual experiences using the LG V30 to film their short films — especially when it was mentioned (several times and by different panelists) how much less intimidating people found it to act or be candid in front of a phone vs in front of the usual heavy film equipment and crew.

With its Cine Video Mode, the LG V30 is a great smartphone to use for videography — even if you are just catching video of your friends and family. I can’t help but wonder what else people will come up with, but how cool is it that such a powerful tool is available to anyone with a bit of creativity and the proper equipment?

We’ve covered the LG V30 quite a bit here already, and we will have a full review soon.
