Distil Union makes great wallets. I’ve reviewed a bunch and use one every single day. Now the company has released two sunglass designs. I received the Distil Union MagLock Folly Sunglasses for review. These aren’t any sunglasses though. They frames are unbreakable. The polarized lenses are good for your eyes. And, thanks to magnets, they’ll hang around for a while.

Sunglasses are notoriously difficult to keep track of– and the best pair really are the ones you have with you. MagLock Sunglasses are specially designed to be the most comfortable sunglasses to wear and the most difficult to lose: Hidden neodymium magnets securely clip these sunnies onto your shirt, and instantly mount to anything magnetic.

The company refers to this design as the Folly. Available in Anchor Black, Storm Gray, Kelp Green or Surf Turquoise, they have a classic wayfarer-style with keyhole bridge. The name comes from Folly Beach, Charleston and, while they have an MSRP of $79.99 they are currently just $63.99.

The Distil Union MagLock Folly Sunglasses ship with an origami hard case.

It folds flat, so it won’t take up any room when you are wearing the sunglasses.

It’s a cool design but no a surprise considering Distil Union’s penchant for out-of-the-box thinking.

They also include a soft protective sleeve that can double as a lens-cleaning cloth.

But there’s much more to these sunglasses than meets your eyes. They have a flexible “shape-memory” frame that can get bent, bumped, sat on, etc. and they won’t break. They are, as the company likes to put it, “unbreakable and unshakeable.”

What sets these sunglasses apart, however, is something hidden within the frames… magnets.

The magnets mean you can clip them to your shirt when you are out and about and never fear losing them.

The magnets also mean you can put them on anything metal at home and know where they are when you are in a rush to leave. It works well and is one of those “why didn’t someone think of this sooner” ideas that make great products great.

As Distil Union puts it…

Tiny magnets. Big breakthrough: MagLock’s hidden magnets not only clip to your shirt– they also mount to any magnetic surface, so you always know where your sunglasses are:
On your fridge or light switch for grab-and-go convenience.
On the side of your bag for quick scratch-free storage.
On your rearview mirror, your bike, Ikea FJÄLKINGE shelves…

Frame Features:

Of course, sunglasses are, first and foremost, about protecting your eyes from the sun. These sunglasses have you covered thanks to their lightweight, FDA approved, impact-resistant lenses made with a “neutral gray color to ease eye strain and allow for truest color perception.” The lenses provide 100% UVA and UVB protection and have a polarized core to reduce glare and eye strain. They are also scratch-resistant and anti-reflective. In other words, on a bright day, these sunglasses will be your eyes best friend.

When I got the Folly sunglasses, Raina wasn’t impressed. They are light and have a plastic feel to them that, to her mind, made them feel a bit “cheap.” (Sorry Distil Union, but we keep it real here on the site!) I, however, disagree with Raina. They are light, but that’s a good thing if you plan on wearing them frequently and for extended periods of time. They are serious about keeping your eyes safe. And, of course, the magnets are a terrific addition to the design and make them sunglasses worthy of a review on Gear Diary. I don’t love the color I was sent, but I’m more concerned with protecting my eyes than I am with making a fashion statement. I like the Distil Union MagLock Folly Sunglasses, and they will be coming on our cruise next month. If you need a new pair of eye protectors, these are worth considering. Check them out here.
