While the LG G8 ThinQ may not have the V50 ThinQ’s Dual Screen case, and its 5G connectivity, The G8 ThinQ does have another trick up its sleeve — or at the end of your sleeve, rather: Palm Vein Authentication. Whaaat?

I am *not* trying to make the LG G8 ThinQ levitate! 😉

That’s right, the LG G8 ThinQ makes its own mark by being the first smartphone to offer advanced palm vein authentication. The “Hand ID” identifies the phone’s owner by the shape, thickness and other characteristics of the veins in their palm to unlock the device. This is made possible thanks to the Z Camera and infrared sensors, and it’s said to be even more secure than fingerprint recognition.

The Z Camera isn’t just for security though. It also comes into play when you want to capture selfies in portrait mode where it is used to calculate depth and adjust the shot based upon what the internal sensors find. Of course, fancy palm recognition is just part of the story. The G8 ThinQ is an impressive smartphone offering a 3,350mAh battery, a 6.2” OLED display and a quick Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 mobile platform.

The LG V50 is also no slouch in the photography department. It has three rear-facing cameras, a dedicated night shot mode, and low-light HDR technology that will let users take advantage of the Z Camera’s power. And when it comes to shooting video… not only will you find an entire suite of features that you would expect from a 2019 smartphone, but there’s also a video portrait mode that will give users control of bokeh. It sounds cool and, if it works as promised, it will let users shoot more professional looking videos then they’ve ever experienced using something as small and simple as a smartphone.
