In the words of the famous children’s book, Everyone Poops. The question is, why clean up with paper, basically the same way cavemen did? Brondell offers a more sophisticated way to go with the Brondell Swash 1400, a luxury bidet toilet seat with a ton of convenient and cleanly features. The Swash 1400 retails for $649 direct from Brondell.

The Swash 1400 is Brondell’s flagship bidet toilet seat and it shows when you see the laundry list of features. The whole family appreciates the heated toilet seat, while the unlimited warm water bidet prevents a chilly surprise for my wife and me. The seven nozzle positions and nozzle oscillation feature make the bidet work for any body shape.

Ignore the out-of-style toilet.

Bidets have gained popularity in the US recently for a few reasons. First, it’s the best way to clean yourself after going to the bathroom. I mean, how many things do we clean with paper alone? We clean everything with water, why not our butts? Also, it’s more eco-friendly since we’re not using a ton of toilet paper or even wipes. While I used to think wipes were the best way to clean up after going #2, I’ve been converted to the bidet, especially after seeing all of the plumbing trouble folks have gotten into with supposedly flushable wipes. For more reasons, check out this great blog post from Brondell about the benefits of a bidet.

Here’s a great overview video from Brondell explaining the features of the Swash 1400:

The installation plate that allows for a quick release to clean or service the toilet seat.

Installation was very easy and only took about 30 minutes, which included removing the old toilet seat, cleaning the toilet, and installing the Swash 1400. All I needed was a screwdriver and wrench; it was really simple and I’m not the handiest guy around. After removing the previous toilet seat and cleaning the toilet, you install the quick-release base that the Swash clicks onto. Then you hook up the water line, which tees off of the existing cold water line that feeds the toilet. Finally, you plug the power cable into a nearby GFCI outlet and you’re ready to go!

The tucked-away water line and power cable.

The first thing I noticed was the Swash 1400 looks really classy and not like a scary piece of technology. There is a recessed pocket where the water connection and electrical cables are so you don’t see them from the front. The lid and seat close softly, which is excellent since we have two young kids who like to slam everything. The next thing I noticed was the space age blue light that illuminated the toilet bowl. While I’m sure it’ll be great once our kids are older, it entranced my 18-month old into reaching his hands into the toilet, so we decided to disable the nightlight.

The beautiful blue nightlight that attracted my 18 month old like a moth to flame.

Manual controls on the left side of the toilet seat.

The included wireless remote.

The included wireless remote makes using the Swash 1400 simple. The remote even comes with a wall mount if you want to attach it to the wall for easy access. We ended up hiding the remote so that our kids didn’t play with it. What’s great about the Swash 1400 is that even if our kids found the remote, they’d have to be sitting on the toilet in order for anything to happen, since it comes with a safety sensor that requires your tush to be on the seat.

Eco mode status LED

Status LEDs when you’re sitting on the seat and the seat is warm.

The Swash 1400 has an automatic eco-mode that allows you to keep the seat heated at a minimal level so you’re not wasting too much electricity keeping it warm when not in use. Eco mode goes into effect after about 10 minutes of the toilet not being used, but quickly warms the seat up once you take a seat. A couple of other neat features are the warm air dryer and the deodorizer that has a replaceable carbon-block filter. Also, the dual nozzles are made of stainless steel, which is more durable and hygienic than plastic nozzles. One nozzle is for the front wash and one nozzle is for the rear wash, keeping things separated. Finally, the nozzles can be sterilized with a push of a button. The nozzles rinse themselves in a sterilizing wash that uses silver nanoparticles.

A look under the hood. The nightlight on the left, the dual nozzles in the middle, and the air dryer to the right.

What it looks like with the toilet seat and cover up.

This was the first time I used a bidet of any kind, so it definitely took some getting used to. The sensation of getting washed by the bidet was different at first, but you get used to it the more you use it. I almost exclusively used the oscillating wash because I felt that it got me cleaner. I appreciated the different spray widths and water pressure settings, though I found the widest spray setting didn’t have enough power behind it.

Here’s what it looks like when the nozzle is spraying.

I would say that the bidet got me about 99% clean on average with just the oscillating wash and I would then use a little bit of toilet paper to finish up and dry off. I found that the warm air dry, while it felt nice, didn’t really get me dry on its own. The seat feels great thanks to the electric seat warming. My 4-year-old daughter is a huge fan, exclaiming she didn’t want to get off the potty because it was “soooo warm!”

The Brondell Swash 1400 is a great value for the features you’re getting. It has almost all of the features you need on a bidet toilet seat and while it’s Brondell’s most expensive seat, it’s not crazy expensive compared to the competition on the market. With a heated seat, dual stainless steel nozzles, wireless remote, replaceable deodorizer, and more, it’s an excellent replacement for your boring old toilet seat.

The Brondell Swash 1400 comes in both round and elongated shapes, which means that it will fit almost any modern American toilet. It’s also available in both white and biscuit colors to match almost any bathroom décor. You can purchase yours directly from the manufacturer at Brondell.com.
