Some people live life blissfully unaware of their phone’s battery life. They are the lucky ones. The rest of us fear the “low battery” signal, as it means being tied to a charger or an external battery. Qualcomm is coming to the rescue, with Quick Charge 5, which can take a phone from 0 to 50% in five minutes.

Qualcomm says this magical new charging protocol will be compatible with Snapdragon 865, 865 Plus, and other top-tier Qualcomm processors. And in addition to 5 minutes to 50% (it’s like science fiction!), 15 minutes gets you to 100% battery life (it also saves you 15% or more on car insurance, but that’s a separate product entirely). Basically, they’ve figured out a way to ramp up the power fed to the batteries without exploding anything, which is pretty darned impressive. Imagine a world where you don’t ever have charger anxiety because in the time it takes for Starbucks to finish making your triple mocha latte with extra shots, you’ve topped off your phone. Or a world where you don’t need four external batteries to get through travel because all you need is 15 minutes with an outlet (kind of like the very nerdy version of 7 minutes in heaven for your phone?)

Expect to see phones with Quick Charge 5 later in 2020!
