Higher display refresh rates on devices provide faster and smoother gaming and media streaming, and until recently, a 120Hz refresh rate was the stuff of flagship smartphones with premium prices. MediaTek‘s newest chip, the Dimensity 800U, will bring that premium experience to mid-tier 5G devices, but that’s not all it will do.

Whether you are ready or not, 5G is coming, and I’m impatiently waiting for my area to get with the program. But whether you have 5G in your area or not, the processor in your phone is what makes it able to do much more than make downloads ridiculously faster and reduce latency issues that we now see on our 4G/LTE networks.

[Latency is that lag you experience when you are playing an online game, and you execute a command. That command has to go to your network first, and then it is completed on your phone — which can mean the loss of a gaming life if your network isn’t fast enough. But even if you aren’t a gamer, latency likely affects you in ways that have caused frustration. Latency can make opening your favorite sites seem to take forever, and it can make streaming video painful when your network is congested. 5G will solve these issues and give you true high-speed broadband like you (hopefully) have at home — on-the-go, right in the palm of your hand.]

But to take advantage of 5G capabilities, your phone has to be 5G ready, and it has to be equipped with a chip that can handle the speeds. That’s where the MediaTek Dimensity 800U comes in.

The latest System on a Chip (or SoC) from MediaTek, the Dimensity 800U, is designed to provide multi-core performance a deliver premium experiences, even on mid-tier 5G smartphones.

The integrated 5G modem in MediaTek’s Dimensity 800U not only supports sub-6Ghz SA and NSA networks, but also supports cutting-edge technologies such as 5G+5G dual SIM dual standby (DSDS), dual Voice over New Radio (VoNR), and 5G two carrier aggregation (2CC 5G-CA), bringing users faster and more stable 5G connections. With MediaTek 5G UltraSave technology, the modem’s operating mode is managed based on network environment and data transmission quality, extending the battery life of mobile devices.

Built on the 7nm process, the Dimensity 800U delivers high performance while also minimizing power consumption. The SoC has an octa-core CPU with a dual cluster consisting of two Arm Cortex-A76 processors with a clock speed of 2.4GHz and six Arm Cortex-A55 processors with a clock speed of 2.0GHZ, offering incredible performance. Dimensity 800U integrates an Arm Mali-G57 GPU, an independent AI processing unit (APU) and LPDDR4x RAM.

So not only will the MediaTek Dimenstity 800U give you the high performance needed for 5G capabilities, but it will also minimize your device’s power consumption — extending that ever-important battery life. So what else will this chip provide on top of an incredible 5G experience?

You can also expect support for 120Hz FHD+ displays as well as support for the HDR10+ standard, plus you’ll get the benefit of the integrated MediaTek MiraVision PQ engine, which provides HDR optimization for various types of videos. Even better, the MediaTek Dimensity 800U chip adds support for the flexible camera placement manufacturers want to use on their phones — and it can handle up to 64-megapixels and quad camera capabilities— with AI camera-enhancing functions. Another notable benefit this chip offers is support for voice on wakeup and dual-mic noise reduction technology. So, your Google assistant won’t consume as much power when it is on standby, and it will be able to hear you perfectly even in a noisier environment.

And remember, these are features that will soon be available on mid-tier 5G phones, not just on those $1000+ flagships. I’m here for it!
