TCL might not be one of the first brands you think of when considering a new mobile phone, but they should be. TCL combines top-notch screens with impressive cameras and powerful processors that punch far above their price class. They’re at it again with the new TCL 20 Series phones!
TCL 20 Pro 5G
The TCL 20 Pro 5G is taking the best of the TCL phone lineup to new heights. It will have a curved 6.67″ AMOLED FHD+ (1080×2400 resolution) display with NXTVISION 2.0 for better color accuracy; its improved AI visual enhancement will automatically adjust the color, contrast, and sharpness of what’s on your screen for more accurate and adaptive calibration. It will support HDR10 for Netflix streaming.
Sporting a quad rear camera array that includes a Sony IMX main sensor, ultra-wide, macro, and depth sensors, you’ll be set for taking your best shots — and since the cameras sit flush with the phone’s back, there will be no wobble when you set the phone down. Details on those camera sensors are:
- 48MP Sony OIS main camera: AF, Sony IMX582, OIS (Optical Image Stabilization), PDAF, sensor size 1/2″, aperture F1.79, 79º field of view, 6P lens
- 16MP ultra wide-angle camera: FF, sensor size 1/3″, aperture F2.4, 123º field of view, 5P lens
- 5MP macro camera: FF, sensor size 1/5″, aperture F2.2, 83° field of view, 3P lens
- 2MP depth camera: FF, sensor size 1/5″, aperture F2.4, 85° field of view, 3P lens
The HDR-enabled 32MP front camera has a “Backlight Selfie” LCD flash feature, so you won’t have to post any washed-out selfies on Instagram.
You also won’t run out of juice part of the way through your adventure since TCL promises you’ll get over a day’s use from its 4,500mAh battery and 18W fast charging when plugged in and 15W wireless charging. The TCL 20 Pro 5G will have 6GB RAM and 256GB internal storage, and you’ll be able to expand it with up to a 1TB microSD. The phone will run the Qualcomm Snapdragon 750G 5G Mobile Platform.
Look for the TCL 20 Pro 5G in a beautiful marine blue or moondust gray starting in the UK, Italy, and Portugal for €549 before moving worldwide, with pricing dependent on the area.
TCL 20L+
If you’re outdoors with sunglasses on a lot, you’re going to want the TCL 20L+, as it is the first phone to use TÜV Rheinland-certified Circular Polarization Display technology. That’s a very fancy-sounding way of saying the 6.67″ FHD+ (1080×2400 resolution) display is viewable with polarized lenses, so you won’t constantly be tipping your sunglasses to read Twitter on the beach.
It comes with 6GB RAM and 256GB user memory, and it can accept up to a 1TB microSD card; it runs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 662 processor and has a huge 5,000mAh battery.
The TCL 20L+ has a quad-camera array that includes the following sensors:
- 64MP main camera: AF, sensor size 1/2″, aperture F1.79, 79.4° field of view, 6P lens
- 8MP wide-angle camera: FF, sensor size 1/4″, aperture F2.2, 118° field of view, 5P lens
- 2MP macro camera: FF, sensor size 1/5″, aperture F2.4, 83° field of view, 3P lens
- 2MP depth camera: FF, sensor size 1/5″, aperture F2.4, 83° field of view, 3P lens
The 16-megapixel front camera also has an LCD flash, so any photos you post will only embarrass your friends based on content, not blurry images.
The TCL 20L+ will come in Milky Way Gray (complete with prismatic crystals for a night-sky effect) as well as North Star Blue. It hits the UK, Italy, and Portugal for €269, with more countries and price points pending. In the North American market, this will be released as the TCL 20S, which will feature LTE speed enhancements for our 4G networks.
TCL 20L
If you want that awesome TCL screen tech, but you’re on a budget, the TCL 20L should be tops on your list; like its big brother, the 20L+, the TCL 20L has a 6.67 FHD+ Display (1080×2400 resolution) that sports TÜV Rheinland-certified Circular Polarization Displays tech, as well as two-day battery life. This way, you can take the phone hiking and see your display without losing power!
The rear quad-camera array includes:
- 48MP main camera: AF, sensor size 1/2″, aperture F2.0, 80.3° field of view, 5P lens
- 8MP wide-angle camera: FF, sensor size 1/4″, aperture F2.2, 118°field of view, 5P lens
- 2MP macro camera: FF, sensor size 1/5″, aperture F2.4, 83° field of view, 3P lens
- 2MP depth camera: FF, sensor size 1/5″, aperture F2.4, 83° field of view, 3P lens
And the 16-megapixel front camera also has an LCD flash for better selfies in poor light.
There will be two memory configurations available at either 4GB RAM with 128GB user memory or 6GB RAM with 128GB user memory. It will accept microSD cards up to 1TB; it will be powered by a 5,000mAh battery and use the Qualcomm Snapdragon 662 processor.
The TCL 20L comes in Luna Blue and Ellipse Black, hitting the UK, Italy, and Portugal before the rest of the world for €229.
You can watch the full TCL 20 Series launch event here (it starts at the -30:34 mark).
Be sure to keep watching after the phone announcements are made, when Stefan Streit, TCL’s General Manager of Global Marketing, talks about their latest Fold ‘n Roll concept phone, which will utilize TCL’s proprietary Dragonhinge and Rollable/Extendable display mechanisms that we’ve seen in earlier TCL display concepts.
The Fold ‘n Roll would be like three devices in one — a 6.87″ smartphone when folded; an 8.85″ “phablet” when unfolded, and when extended, it would be a full 10-inch tablet. TCL says they are on track to release their first folding device later this year. I’m looking forward to seeing an affordable folding smartphone — and you know that if anyone can do it, it’s TCL!
