WAMA Underwear Review: Hemp Underwear That Is Better for Your Body, Your Wallet, and the Planet

The Lowdown

WAMA Underwear boxer briefs are perfect; they are soft and fitted but without any seams, edges, or tight spots. The band is fitted but doesn’t bunch, and the underwear was extremely breathable and comfortable during a very active and sweaty workout session. The boxer briefs didn’t ride up or budge — even when doing kettlebell swings or squats — so I was impressed!

Do you give much thought to what your underwear is made from? I’ve mostly thought in terms of “these are comfy” or “these aren’t comfy,” and that was usually the extent of it. WAMA Underwear wants you to consider that your underwear, like everything else, has a bigger environmental footprint than you realize, and the answer is to make your underwear out of hemp!

WAMA Underwear

I can’t speak for every person, but I generally prefer just to know my boxer briefs are there; I don’t necessarily give deep thought to where they came from or why one type of fabric might be better than another. So why consider hemp?

Hemp fabric is naturally anti-bacterial with anti-odor properties. Super comfortable, breathable and gets softer with every wash. Hemp is also organic, eco-friendly and can help save the planet. Hemp is the perfect fabric for your underwear. Why Not Hemp?

I was particularly impressed with WAMA Underwear’s mission statement:

Our mission is to pioneer the hemp underwear industry by making the best hemp undies in the world and constantly improving the fit, function and design. During this process we hope to bring more awareness to hemp as an option for clothing, especially underwear.

As we were studying hemp textiles we learned that hemp fabric has many benefits like being naturally anti-bacterial, super soft and breathable. We quickly realized that the best application for hemp fabric would be hemp underwear and that’s how WAMA was born.

We started from scratch creating our unique hemp fabric. We had a rigorous and super long design process because we wouldn’t accept anything less than perfect. For most this would be their first experience with hemp underwear so we obsessed on every detail from the stitches, pattern pieces, colors and overall design. We want everyone’s first experience with hemp underwear to be nothing short of amazing!

This sounds great, but we don’t simply take any marketing-speak as gospel. So I did some Google-fu of my own, and I came across a Forbes article that basically indicates the same thing, singing the praises of hemp’s versatility and sustainability.

Hemp is effectively the plant’s first cousin to cannabis, and there’s a reason they call it “weed.” It’s a hardy plant that doesn’t require babying to create a crop that can be used for myriad purposes, including, yes, hemp fiber clothing. There’s obviously some processing and other treatments going on to make underwear from a weed, so don’t go rolling your hemp underwear into a joint. Although, if you do, PLEASE drop a comment and let us know how it went.

All jokes aside, WAMA Underwear uses a material made from a blend of 53% hemp, 44% organic cotton, and 3% spandex for a durable, breathable, anti-microbial, sustainable pair of underwear that has a little bit of give for comfort.

WAMA Underwear

So what’s it like to wear hemp underwear? Honestly, WAMA Underwear seems a lot like regular cotton underwear, but it’s really, really soft and comfortable. WAMA makes various styles of hemp underwear for men and women.

As I tested the pairs they sent me, I found myself seeking out the WAMA Underwear over my usual choices because they were noticeably more pleasant to wear.

WAMA Underwear recommends that you should order a size bigger than you would normally when buying cotton underwear when ordering from their men’s sizes. They have a size chart under the “What size should I buy?” section of their FAQ if you want to double-check, but I found that going up one size made for a comfortable fit.

WAMA Underwear does exactly as they describe — it doesn’t bunch, ride up, or in any way remind you that you’re wearing it.

WAMA Underwear

WAMA Underwear on top with Champion underwear underneath. It’s hard to tell from a photo, but the quality difference is notable, with the WAMA Underwear being softer and smoother fabric even after washing a few times.

As a bonus, some models of WAMA Underwear can come in a really pretty shade of green, but if that’s too much personality for your undergarments, you can also opt for hemp color (a sort of a beige) or black.

WAMA Underwear

The only downside to the WAMA Underwear is that they’re not cheap. A single pair of boxer briefs, for instance, is $28, but you can save a bit by getting a 5% off an order of three, 10% off on an order of 6, 15% off on an order of ten, and 20% off on an order of 20.

That seems like a lot of money for boxer briefs when you can get a 5-pack of Fruit of the Loom for $15; I get it. On the other hand, that’s right in line with other premium brands like MeUndies, Tommy John, TomboyX, and Mack Weldon.

If you’re ready to break free from department store cotton boxers, there’s a whole new world with higher-quality materials and corresponding prices out there, something I did not realize until recently.

But there is a definite benefit to buying quality.

As Judie told me when I was questioning the prices on WAMA Underwear in our group chat, “I bought Kev a 6-pack of Hanes boxers a couple of years ago, and a little later that same year I threw down and bought him an assortment of Tommy Johns and Mack Weldons for his birthday. Guess which ones got thrown away because they were falling apart and pilling?! Guess which ones still fit and feel as good as new?! Quality is NO JOKE.”

So there you go.

WAMA Underwear boxer briefs provide sustainability in a few ways. They’re not only made from a sustainable material, but since they’ll last longer, that means fewer items are getting wasted and thrown in landfills … like what happened with Kev’s mass-made boxers.

WAMA Underwear even breaks out the specifics of ecological impact by showing a chart telling how much less water and energy are required to create the products.

Obviously, we can’t time travel into the future to guarantee the WAMA Underwear will last as well as other high-end boxers (and quite frankly, if we had a time machine, updating an underwear review would probably not be in the top 100 ways to use it), but there’s a notable difference in the feel and quality of the WAMA boxers over good ol’ Champion boxers, and there does not seem to be any reason to think they won’t continue to hold up well.

We reviewed the boxer briefs, but WAMA Underwear makes multiple styles for men and women, so be sure to check them out!

WAMA Underwear boxer briefs sell for $28 a pair;  they are available directly from the manufacturer.
