Eufy Security Releases New Outdoor Wi-Fi Security Cameras with Loads of Features

Eufy Security has just announced a host of new outdoor cameras, many of which offer 8GB on-device storage. The new devices include the eufy Security SoloCam E20 & SoloCam E40, the eufy Security SoloCam L20 & SoloCam L40, the solar-powered eufy Security SoloCam S40, and the eufy Floodlight Cam 2 Pro. Read on to see the details on these new security cameras and what they have to offer.

But before I get into eufy’s latest products, let’s address the elephant in the room: On May 17th, 2021, during a server upgrade, eufy suffered a security breach. During the hour and a half that it took to resolve the issue, a small percentage of eufy camera users were able to see live and recorded camera feeds belonging to total strangers. After fixing the breach, eufy released this statement about what had happened:

During a software update performed on our server in the United States on May 17th at 4:50 AM EDT, a bug occurred affecting a limited number of users in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Cuba, New Zealand, Australia, and Argentina.

Users in Europe and other regions remain unaffected. Our engineering team identified the issue at 5:30 AM EDT and immediately rolled back the server version and deployed an emergency update. The incident was fixed at 6:30 AM EDT. We have confirmed that a total of 712 users were affected in this case.

Although the issue has been resolved, we recommend users in the affected countries (US, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, New Zealand, Australia, and Cuba) to:

1. Please unplug and then reconnect the eufy security home base.
2. Log out of the eufy security app and log in again.

All of our user video data is stored locally on the users’ devices. As a service provider, eufy provides account management, device management, and remote P2P access for users through AWS servers. All stored data and account information is encrypted.

In order to avoid this happening in the future, we are taking the following steps:

1. We are upgrading our network architecture and strengthening our two-way authentication mechanism between the servers, devices, and the eufy Security app.
2. We are upgrading our servers to improve their processing capacity in order to eliminate potential risks.
3. We are also in the process of obtaining the TUV and BSI Privacy Information Management System (PIMS) certifications which will further improve our product security.

This privacy breach was concerning, yet unfortunately not that unusual with home security cameras in the times we live in. We have seen similar (and even worse) breaches occur with Ring doorbells and indoor cameras, Arlo cameras, and Nest cameras. Those names are some of the biggest in the home security market, and there have likely been many other less publicized breaches occurring with lesser-known brands.

It might be enough to make you think that not having any security cameras around your home or business would be the better option, but that isn’t realistic for many. Whether it’s because you need to keep an eye on a rental property, your front porch, or on your baby, home security cameras that are easy to install, maintain, and operate are a necessary evil that a lot of us have to balance our need for with any privacy or security concerns.

Do I have any eufy cameras? Not yet. But I would be willing to give them a try. I use Google Nest cams, a Ring doorbell, and multiple Arlo cameras in and around my home. Have I stopped using any of them because people have found ways to exploit their security? No. I expect the companies to fix the circumstances that led to each breach, and then all I can do is hope that it never happens again.

As consumers, it seems that the best we can hope for is that companies are quick to respond when a breach occurs, transparent about what occurred, and steps are taken to ensure it never happens again.

In this case, it appears that eufy has done that.

So with that said, Let’s talk about security cameras.

Deciding which security cameras to place in and around your home comes with many decisions you’ll have to make. Do you want something cloud-based and carries a monthly or yearly subscription charge, or do you want something with local storage and no subscription fee? How long will the wireless camera’s battery last before needing charging? Do you need human detection? How important is night vision? Do you need two-way communication through the camera?
