Pros

  • High-quality IP67 build with an auto-rotating, backlit screen
  • Fold-Away design protects the probe when it isn’t in use
  • Split-second, accurate temperature readings

Cons

  • The only thing that would make it better might be an optional magnetic accessory so it could stick to the side of my pit

I do love some BBQ gear and spend a lot of time on the smoker. The vast majority of items I smoke are done by temperature and not time. With that said, especially when in BBQ competition cookoffs, getting temp readings that are accurate and getting them fast are imperative. The ThermoWorks Thermapen ONE promises to give these readings in one second.

The new version of the Thermapen brings some improved features to an already amazing product. The ThermoWorks Thermapen ONE promises to bring temperature readings in one second or less. This latest version is more accurate, coming within at least one-half degree Fahrenheit. The new digital read-out comes with a brighter backlit screen, and you will get a 5-year warranty against defects.

ThermoWorks Thermapen One

The ThermoWorks Thermapen ONE is IP67 shockproof, dustproof, and waterproof; it has a rugged case that should survive the most intense cooks.

The display is large and bright, and I love the auto-rotating display. I was surprised by how useful the rotating screen was, as it made the display readable from any angle. It is this kind of attention to detail that makes the Thermapen ONE a must-have. The intelligent backlight comes in handy as times change and lighting changes. No matter when or how I look at this screen, it is readable and ready to go.

ThermoWorks Thermapen One

The Thermapen ONE measures 6.1″ long by 1.7″ wide by 0.74″ thick, and it has a 4.3″ long probe. It is powered by a single AAA battery that ThermoWorks says gives it 2,000-hours of battery life.

ThermoWorks Thermapen One

The ThermoWorks Thermapen ONE currently ships in seven color options, with another three becoming available at the end of the month. Having the color options is great, whether you like to keep a certain color scheme in your kitchen or you just want to make sure that your Thermapen ONE doesn’t get confused with someone else’s during a cookout.

Perhaps the only feature that would improve it for my use would be adding a magnet so that I could stick it to the side of my pit. There is a ThermoWorks Thermapen ONE Silicone Boot available for an additional $13.99 that is not only magnetic, it also glows in the dark, and has a built-in lanyard.

It will protect the Thermapen ONE from drops to concrete or hard surfaces, and it also provides protection from radiant heat, so it’s worth consideration.

ThermoWorks Thermapen One

The fold-away design protects the temperature probe when it is not in use.

I used the ThermoWorks Thermapen ONE on a recent cook and was blown away by the quality and speed of the device. My family liked the review process since it meant a complete smoker full of food for them to taste. The pork belly was the smoked meat of choice for this cook, and I utilize several temperatures for completion.

The Thermapen ONE performed flawlessly, and the meal was incredible. Not only is the device rugged and well made but using this fast of a temperature probe of this quality is a game-changer. I will never return to my old cheap temperature probe, and I cannot wait to use the Thermapen ONE during competitions.

  1. This is the very thing my wife will use to get the meat to the right temperature. You don’t want to over cook or under cook.
