PopSocket PopCase Review: It Really “POPS” in a Crowded Case Market

I’ve never been a PopSocket person; when you shove your phone into your pockets as often as I do, you don’t generally want anything that makes the phone any bulkier than necessary. However, as phones have gotten bigger, the argument for something that provides a grip and a stand becomes stronger. PopSocket has decided to jump into the crowded case market with their new PopSocket PopCase that claims to solve both my issues. Does it work? Read on to find out!

My expectations were low for the PopSocket PopCase because I did not know what to expect. I have to say, though, that I am deeply impressed with the cases! There’s a nice rim that provides screen-down protection, there’s a raised brim to protect the camera array on the back, the cutouts and buttons are precise and easy to access and press, and the case boasts 10ft of drop protection.

There is nothing I hate more in a case than wiggly spots, and the PopSocket PopCase is as solid as can be, even at the lightning port. The “egg-crate” design inside not only provides drop protection but also adds a nice visual flair to the outside edges.

All that makes it a great case, but what makes it stand out? Well, PopSocket really thought through the design; the PopSocket on the case isn’t built into the case itself but on a plastic slider that can be moved up and down or even removed. It can be slid up or down to hold it comfortably; you can swap it for different disc designs, and if you want to slim down, just slide the whole contraption off the case. That’s the part that intrigued me!

As I said, I’m not a fan of PopSockets or any attachments to the back of my phone for everyday carry. But when I’m watching a movie on my phone, it’s handy to prop it up, and having both a typical case and a stand case with one slider is a very cool idea. PopSocket says the attachment is compatible with all the usual PopSocket accessories, so if it fits on a regular PopSocket, it will work on the PopSocket PopCase.

The only downside is that while wireless charging will work if you move the slider, you need to use one of the MagSafe-specific PopCases if you want to toss the PopSocket PopCase on a magnetic mount. Still, the pros outweigh that one con.

I can’t believe how impressed I am with the PopSocket PopCase! The flexibility of the PopSocket option and the build quality of the case is really fantastic, making this one of the few times that I think $50 ($60 for the MagSafe version) for a plastic case is worthwhile!

If you’re looking for a quality case with a part-time grip option, the PopSocket PopCase is a surprisingly excellent all-in-one solution! PopCases are currently available for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13.

The PopSocket PopCase retails for $50 ($60 for the MagSafe compatible version); it is available directly from the manufacturer.

What I Like: Protective and durable case; PopSocket slides up/down and on/off easily; Lots of customization and accessory options

What Needs Improvement: The basic case interferes with MagSafe mounts; The PopSocket logo around the camera is a little flashy
