Withings Body Scan Features a 6-Lead ECG; It Can Assess Nerve Activity and Measure Segmental Body Composition, on Top of Tracking Your Weight

Smart scales continue to get more intelligent, and none is more advanced than the Withings Body Scan, which provides daily analysis and record of biomarkers associated with common health conditions. Not only can the Body Scan monitor segmental body composition, heart rate, and vascular age, it also provides measurements that will assess nerve activity and heart rhythm using a 6-lead ECG. With a tool like this in your arsenal, it has never been easier to take proactive control over your health!

Withings Body Scan

Developed with specialists in cardiovascular, neurologic, and metabolic conditions, the Withings Body Scan allows users to access coaching, clinical specialists, and personalized, holistic plans in-app to help them reach their health goals. These programs will provide users with essential insights based on well-known metrics and the ability to be connected with medical specialists in case of health concerns.

Withings Body Scan

The Withings Body Scan consists of a single high-strength tempered glass platform encompassing a retractable handle. Body Scan contains four weight sensors and 14 ITO electrodes within the platform; there are four stainless steel electrodes in the handle for 6-lead ECG and segmental body composition analysis.

Body Scan also has a larger, high resolution 3.2″ LCD color screen that displays instant stats. You can check and track past readings in the Withings Health app, available for iOS and Android.

Withings Body Scan provides an accurate to 0.1 pounds and advanced weight management experience, thanks to its advanced weight sensors and unique retractable handle form factor.

This Withings scale will integrate the breakthrough technology of segmental body composition, allowing a never-seen level of precision for body composition monitoring.

There are electrodes placed in the base of the device and the handle that send low-level, safe electrical signals; with them, Body Scan uses multi-frequency Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) to measure overall body composition.

It can measure whole-body fat and water percentage, visceral fat, muscle and bone mass, as well as extracellular and intracellular water, providing readings for individual body parts, including your torso, arms, and legs, in less than three seconds.

Health experts and sports professionals often use segmental body composition; it allows the slightest changes in body composition to be identified and monitored over time. Doing so recognizes fat mass distribution, informs users of potential health risks associated with localized fat findings, and efficiently spots muscle imbalances.

Withings is democratizing this technology by bringing it out of the sports lab and into your home.

Withings Body Scan

Developed with experts from Impeto Medical, Body Scan can track sweat gland activity in the feet, providing a daily assessment of small nerve activity. This measurement is performed in under 30 seconds by applying a small direct current through the electrodes located in the plate. It will provide a reading as an easy-to-understand score (computed from an Electrochemical Skin Conductance), delivered to you via the Withings App.

Sweat is triggered by the small nerves that are innervating the sweat glands. Sudomotor function can be evaluated by measuring the ability of the sweat glands in your feet to release chloride ions in response to an electrical stimulus. An impaired sudomotor function is a sign of reduced sweat gland innervation, linked to a degeneration of small nerve fibers.

Lifestyle changes, such as healthy eating and regular activity, can improve nerve activity for a healthier lifestyle. The Withings Health app will provide actionable insights and personalized plans to help you adopt healthy habits and affect change.

Withings Body Scan

Because cardiovascular conditions are often linked to weight issues, the Withings Body Scan is designed to seamlessly offer a variety of cardiovascular measurements at every weigh-in, with upcoming features to include heart rate, ECG recordings, and vascular age.

Body Scan will employ a 6-lead ECG to detect and record arrhythmias through the two sets of electrodes located on each side of the handle and one within the scale’s base. Withing’s proprietary embedded algorithm can detect heart patterns associated with atrial fibrillation. The results are shared directly on the Body Scan’s LCD screen and in the accompanying app, where readings are stored to show trends over time and be shared with medical professionals.

Vascular age will provide a daily, easy-to-understand assessment of arterial health and overall wellness by showing individual users how their cardiovascular health compares to the norms expected within their age bracket, using an estimate of their inner vascular age.

Combining groundbreaking in-home medical metrics with in-app access to medical professionals and personalized information will make the Withings Body Scan a central part of each user’s health journey.

Leveraging Withings’ existing remote patient interfaces, a subscription service will allow users to connect with medical specialists for advice and consultation while providing clinical teams with data in real-time.

Personalized health plans that span wellness topics, including nutrition, sleep, exercise, and stress management, will also offer Withings Body Scan users valuable information that can help motivate them to make behavioral and lifestyle changes to improve outcomes and help them achieve their health goals.

Doctors who specialize in cardiovascular, neurologic, and metabolic conditions developed the Withings Body Scan. It is expected to be available in the second half of 2022, following CE and FDA clearance. Available in black or white, the Body Scan will come with a three-month subscription to Withings health and wellness programs; it will sell for $299.95.
