Gear Diary's Best of CES 2022 Awards

Twinkly Dots are the first app-controlled LED string on the market with a miniaturized design that removes the need for the bulky profile of the LED strings we’re used to seeing. The nearly invisible wires make Twinkly Dots extremely light, flexible, and discreet; they’re also the first Twinkly product available in a USB-powered, totally portable version.

With the refined look and feel of high-end decorator lights, Twinkly Dots are as versatile and easy to use as classic LED strings lights, but you can create exciting and more refined ways to illuminate your spaces with them.

Through the Twinkly smartphone app, you can detect the exact position of each Twinkly light and fully customize them with effects, shading, and animation; you can also pick and edit premade effects in the gallery or download new ones, or you can create your own effects.

You configure the dots through Wi-FI or Bluetooth; you can control them through the iOS or Android Twinkly app or with your favorite voice-activated digital assistants, including Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, and Homey.

Twinkly Dots are available now in three sizes, including 10′ (60 LEDs) for $49.99, 33′ (200 LEDs) for $114.99, and 66′ (400 LEDs).

You can also follow recipes, track calorie intake, and start specific steaming programs through the connected app.

Arlo Security System

Gear Diary's Best of CES 2022 Awards

The Arlo Security System is designed to be simple to install and even easier to use. At the center of the system are a discreet, first-of-its-kind, all-in-one multi-sensor that measures just 1.1″ across and a security hub with an integrated, backlit keypad for easy use when it’s day or night.

The small, unassuming multi-sensors can be configured for a range of security purposes, including recognizing motion, door/window openings and tilt, water leaks, light/temperature changes, and T3 and T4 smoke/CO alarm patterns.

The multi-sensors are very compact, and they can be placed anywhere without hardwiring. That means you get security not only from home invaders but also from silent killers, such as smoke and carbon monoxide.

As you would expect, the new Arlo Security System works perfectly with existing or added Arlo security camera devices, the Arlo App, and Arlo Secure subscription service. Together, all the parts of the new system promise excellent security and the ability to monitor your home more closely than ever.

We don’t have the final word yet on pricing or a launch date for the Arlo Security System, but we will update once it is available.

John Deere Autonomous Tractor

Last year at CES, John Deere showcased how technology and sustainability drive modern farming, but they took things to a whole new level this year. Building upon 20 years of self-driving technology that still required a farmer to supervise what was happening from the tractor, the John Deere Autonomous Tractor is now a reality. This futuristic tractor will not require human supervision in the cab, freeing up time and helping farmers work more efficiently.

The John Deere Autonomous Tractor combines an 8R Tractor, a TruSet-enabled chisel plow, a GPS guidance system, and new advanced technologies so that farmers can be more efficient in their harvest duties, which is one of the most stressful times for farmers.

During the fall harvest, a farmer’s focus must be on gathering their crops as efficiently as possible and ensuring that these crops are protected until they can be transported for sale. Concurrent with harvesting, they also have to till the fields to put excess plant-based nutrients back into the soil to ensure a successful crop the following year.

With skilled labor being so hard to find and time being of the essence, the John Deere Autonomous Tractor can step in and ease the tillage pressure on the farmer. After harvesting their field, the farmer can activate the tractor, which will handle the tillage job for them.

Each John Deere Autonomous Tractor has six pairs of stereo cameras that create a 360-degree view so the tractor can always see what’s going on in the field. With the tractor set for autonomous operation, the tractor continuously checks its position relative to a geofence, ensuring it is operating where it is supposed to, with accuracy within less than 1?. The farmer can oversee and make adjustments as needed through a connected app.

Think about it; this can only relieve some of the stress on the world’s farmers, giving them a better quality of life so they can continue providing us with the food and fiber that we need and can’t grow ourselves.

Piana Tech E/SMART Fabric

Likely, you don’t give much thought to the amount of polyurethane foam in our everyday lives. Everything from our beds to chairs to cars and airplanes is stuffed full of PU foam. It’s not recyclable, and when it hits the end of its life, we just dump it in a landfill. But there may be a better option soon available with the reusable Piana Technology E/Smart Fiber.

Non-woven Piana Technology E/Smart Fiber improves upon foam fabrics in several ways. One, it’s lightweight and built to orient the fibers vertically, which basically makes it stronger, more supportive, and more breathable than traditional foam materials.

This also allows Piana to integrate digital sensors in the fiber; the fiber products can then be used in contexts like long-term care facilities where monitoring for movement can help prevent bedsores and other complications.

But that’s not the only reason E/Smart is so interesting. It’s also easily refurbished, meaning that if it’s used for a while and the seats or material are worn, it can be sent back to Piana Tech, refreshed, and put back into circulation as fresh fiber again.

Piana Technology has been chiefly known for its business-to-business work, but they’re expanding into working with consumers with E/Smart foam.
