The Lowdown

The Timekettle W4 AI Interpreter Earbuds are an excellent product. I love their design and find them elegant, and I never seem to tire of opening and closing their case. In use, they are a pleasure with quick and accurate translations without the need to repeat yourself. The app is easy to use. Set-up and switching modes take seconds. My only complaint is that their sound quality for music playback could be improved for this price range, and it could be easily enhanced with the addition of a graphic equalizer in the Timekettle app.

Since 2016, Timekettle has become a leading manufacturer of AI translator devices, which now include handheld translators as well as several earbud models. Depending on your needs, preferences, and budget, it appears that Timekettle has a product for every situation. In the past, we reviewed the Fluentalk T1 Mini Translator, a standalone device from Timekettle, and found it to be a solid performer. In this review, we test the Timekettle W4 AI Interpreter Earbuds.

Timekettle W4 AI Interpreter Earbuds and charging case. Design

The first thing that you notice about the W4 AI Interpreter Earbuds is their design. Many translating earbuds available on the market today, including some models made by Timekettle, follow a more established, AirPod-like aesthetic with a small plastic lozenge-shaped box that flips open to reveal a pair of white earbuds.

The Timekettle W4 AI Interpreter Earbuds are a bit different from the start. Their case/charging station is rectangular with curved edges and is available in either a gold or blue subtle metallic finish. The outer shell of the case is metallic and magnetic and features black plastic ends and measures 2.6” high by 2.14” wide by 1.34” deep (66.6 x 54.3 x 33.9mm).

The front of the case has the company name. On the right side of the case is a USB Type-C charging port and an LED battery indicator. The Timekettle W4s make a strong first impression, which is only strengthened when you split the case open to reveal the two earbuds.

The inside of the case is simple, with a single button for pairing and contacts to connect the two sides of the case. Opening and closing the case is quite satisfying as the strong magnets make a solid clack when joined.

The earbuds follow the current industry-standard shape, not dissimilar to Apple AirPods, albeit with longer stems. Each earbud features an indicator light, available in either blue or green, and a touch zone that allows users to control the device’s functions. Each earbud also features dual microphones, found on either end of the stem, as well as a bone-voiceprint sensor, which enables translation accuracy in 100dB noise.

What’s in the box:

Build Quality

Everything about the Timekettle W4 AI Interpreter Earbuds, from the packaging to the manuals and accessories, is up to par with the high level of quality found in the case and earbuds themselves. The earbuds themselves are made of plastic and weigh very little, at 0.2 oz (5.7 grams) each. The complete product, including the case but without cables, weighs 4.1oz (116.5 grams).

Set Up

My earbuds came mostly charged, but I plugged them in for a full charge anyway. Reaching the full charge did not take long at all. The first step in the setup process is to download the Timekettle app. This can be done by scanning the QR code located in the quick start guide or on the back of the packaging that contains the manuals included in the box.

Once downloaded, open the app and register, and then pair the earbuds by depressing the pairing button on the inside of the charging case for two seconds and selecting the Timekettle W4s on your phone under Bluetooth.

The earbuds come with two optional accessories. “Ear Hooks” are plastic clips that connect to the earbuds and clip around your ears and are meant to assist users who find that the Timekettle W4 earbuds feel loose in their ears. “Ear Tips” are silicone covers for the earbuds that reduce movement once they are in place.

I did not experience any difficulties with the fit of the earbuds nor their movement once in place, and did not use either accessory.

Timekettle App

The Timekettle app (available for both iOS and Android) is an integral part of using the W4 earbuds. It is used to control every aspect of the experience, from product selection and pairing to selecting the desired type of translation. The app also displays the status of the earbuds’ connection, their battery levels, and firmware versions.

The app’s two main sections are the One-on-One conversation translation and the Listen & Play translation. When using the One-on-One conversation translation, users select the language of their earbuds as well as the other person’s, and each person wears one earbud. The earbuds play the translation, which is displayed as a conversation in the app.

When using the Listen & Play mode, the phone is used to record the other person’s voice, which is then translated and transmitted to both earbuds worn by the user. The translation is also displayed in the app. When the user wishes to speak, the earbuds listen, and the smartphone plays the translation.

The app includes a product encyclopedia with multilingual support (as you may have expected), where users can find detailed explanations on the workings of the various functions, as well as a troubleshooting section.

There is a user-centric section that tracks orders and allows users to purchase and track “Fish Coins,” a virtual currency that does not expire but cannot be transferred outside of Timekettle. Fish coins can be used to purchase extended translation time.

Each user is granted 300 minutes per month of Voice Call Translation and Multimedia Translation. The 300 minutes apply only to these two types of usage and are renewed at the beginning of each month. If more time is desired, users can purchase it in packages of 500, 1200, or 2000 minutes, which currently sell for 5 Fish (presently reduced to free), 10 Fish, and 15 Fish, respectively. Fish Coins are available in quantities of 5, 10, and 15 and sell for $9.99, $18.99, and $27.99, respectively.

The app also allows users to download offline language packs, which, once installed, enable users to translate without an internet connection.

The app also allows users to contact Timekettle and to adjust a few settings, including storage space, version updates, and account settings.

The one feature that is missing from the app is a graphic equalizer. I realize that equalizers are typically found in apps for earbuds designed for music and multimedia use, but there is no reason why the Timekettle W4s cannot be used in this way, and including the equalizer would allow users to customize their experience further.

Performance

The Timekettle W4 AI Interpreter Earbuds are a pleasure to use. Everyone that tries them is instantly and thoroughly impressed by their speed and accuracy. You can see the smiles coming as soon as you begin speaking.

The W4s leverage Babel OS 2.0, Timekettle’s AI translation platform powered by large language models (LLMs). These models excel at interpreting context and minimizing mistakes, especially with homophones, delivering translations with up to 98% accuracy.

As impressive as their accuracy is, their translation is equally remarkable. According to Timekettle, the response time is 0.2 seconds, with translations completed in under three seconds. The translation simply seems to happen in real time. When combined with Timekettle’s Bone-Voiceprint Sensor and dual microphones working together to isolate your voice from the background, the result is quick and accurate translations without the need to repeat yourself.

The Timekettle W4 AI Interpreter Earbuds support 43 languages and 96 accents. There are 13 pairs of offline languages available. Users also have the option to create a custom glossary that incorporates industry-specific jargon and informal expressions, thereby improving translation precision in specialized or nuanced contexts.

One-on-one conversations happen effortlessly, as once the earbuds are in and languages have been selected, the translation occurs without pressing a button or waiting for the system to catch up. The speakers can view the translation on their phones if they wish, but there is no need for further interaction to maintain the flow.

Stay fully tuned in during conferences, tours, or lectures with the “Listen & Play” mode. The W4 delivers real-time translations straight to your ear—acting as your personal interpreter—so you can follow every word and immerse yourself in the experience without missing a beat.

The Timekettle W4 AI Interpreter Earbuds are compliant with the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) & FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act). Conversations and translations are never stored or used for any purpose, in accordance with EU and US privacy and security laws.

The W4s are earbuds after all, and as such can be used to play music or watch content on your phone. For their price, their sonic quality is satisfactory, but certainly not exceptional. I completely understand that W4s are designed with the focus on translations, as they should be, but with Apple AirPod Pros available for less money and beginning to offer translation services, we cannot completely exclude the desire for the W4s to perform better sonically. This is especially true when much of the issue could be resolved by incorporating a graphic equalizer into the Timekettle app.

Battery

According to Timekettle, the W4 AI Interpreter Earbuds can handle up to four hours of continuous translation or six hours of music playback. When used with the charging case, the battery life rises to ten hours of continuous translation and 18 hours of music playback. Even though I never used the earbuds for four continuous hours, I don’t doubt this, as using them for shorter periods, the battery life was very impressive. I would be confident using them for extended periods.

The Timekettle W4 Interpreter Earbuds sell for $349.00; they are available directly from the manufacturer and other retailers, including Amazon (where they are frequently on sale).
