REDMAGIC has finally announced full details and specifications for its upcoming Astra 2 Gaming Tablet, and it looks like a stunner. The Astra 2 features Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor paired with REDMAGIC’s custom RedCore R4 gaming chip, which is designed to improve responsiveness, allocate system resources more efficiently, and maintain steadier frame rates during extended gaming sessions. Buyers will be able to choose between configurations with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage or 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage.
The Astra 2 Gaming Tablet’s top-tier hardware package should benefit from REDMAGIC’s 12-layer AquaCore Cooling System 2.0, which combines a large vapor chamber, Liquid Metal 3.0, graphene, copper foil, and an actual circulating liquid-cooling system. Part of that system is visible through the transparent section on the back, much like on the REDMAGIC 11S Pro Gaming Phone. It is undeniably gamer-ish, complete with customizable RGB lighting, but REDMAGIC has never been a company that believes powerful hardware should dress like an accountant.
The compact form factor remains one of the Astra line’s biggest attractions. The Astra 2 Gaming Tablet has a 9.06″ display, measures only 0.27″ thick, and weighs about 12.8 ounces. That should make it noticeably easier to hold for long gaming sessions than a full-size tablet, particularly when paired with a telescoping controller. It will be offered in silver Starfrost and black Eclipse finishes, both using a metal frame and glass-accented back.
I kept the original REDMAGIC Astra Gaming Tablet after reviewing several of the company’s previous gaming phones and tablets over the years. About a year later, it has survived head-to-head competition with an iPad mini and multiple iPad Pros. I ultimately kept the Astra because it makes emulating PC and retro games relatively easy while delivering a phenomenal compact form factor that is comfortable to carry and hold.
The screen on the Astra 2 Gaming Tablet appears to be another significant upgrade. It is a 2.4K OLED panel with a 2400-by-1504 resolution, an adaptive refresh rate of up to 185Hz, a 300Hz standard touch-sampling rate, and an instantaneous touch-response rate that can reach 2,000Hz. REDMAGIC claims 1,100 nits of full-screen brightness and a peak brightness of 1,600 nits, which could put it within striking distance of the excellent OLED display on the latest iPad Pro. Those numbers come from REDMAGIC’s own laboratory testing, naturally, so real-world comparisons will have to wait until reviewers can place the tablets side by side.
Power comes from an 8,300mAh battery with up to 75-watt charging. Bypass charging can power the tablet directly from the adapter while you play, reducing heat and battery wear caused by gaming and charging simultaneously. The Astra 2 Gaming Tablet also includes two USB-C ports, which should make it easier to connect power without having a cable protruding awkwardly from whichever side you happen to be gripping. The faster short-side port supports DisplayPort output at up to 4K/144Hz or 8K/60Hz, giving the tablet some intriguing big-screen gaming and emulation possibilities. One disappointing detail is that REDMAGIC does not include the charger in the box.
Other features include dual stereo speakers with DTS:X Ultra audio, two X-axis vibration motors for more precise haptic feedback, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, a fingerprint sensor, a customizable Magic Key, and IP54 resistance against dust and splashes. It will run REDMAGIC OS 11.5 based on Android 16 and includes a 13-megapixel rear camera and a compact 9-megapixel front camera. Nobody is likely to buy a gaming tablet for its photography skills, but a usable front camera is still important for video calls, streaming, and the occasional proof-of-life check after an all-night gaming session.
Hopefully, we can get a unit to review in the future. Based on my experience with the original Astra, the Astra 2 Gaming Tablet could be one of the most interesting compact Android tablets of the year, particularly for gamers who want more flexibility than Apple’s tightly controlled ecosystem allows.
