Aulumu SF8 Ultra-Slim Aramid Fiber Case for Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Review: A Great Thin Option for One of the Thinnest Foldables

The modern smartphone is a marvel of engineering, but “rugged” isn’t usually the first word that comes to mind. I’ve used cases and bumpers for years, but ever since trying a Latercase aramid fiber case on a previous Pixel, I’ve been hooked on the power of fibers. I’ve dropped multiple phones in these marvelous thin, light cases, and even in the worst drops, only the cases were damaged. The Aulumu SF8 Ultra-Slim Aramid Fiber Case for Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 was already in my shopping cart when the fortuitous offer to review it came in.

Design and Materials

As the name aptly describes, the Aulumu SF8 Ultra-Slim Aramid Fiber Case for Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Series is made of Aramid Fibers. These woven fibers create a strong material that is also surprisingly thin and light. The Z Fold8, like many foldables, is an interesting phone to protect since it has two halves to protect.

Like many of the thin and light cases on the market, the Aulumu SF8 Ultra-Slim case comes with two parts for the front and back of the phone. The front piece is a minimal strip of material that uses adhesive to stay in place, while the back piece is more like traditional phone cases and clips firmly onto the back half of the phone. Look and Feel

Installation of the Aulumu SF8 Ultra-Slim Aramid Fiber Case for Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 is quite easy: you clip the back portion onto the back of the phone, then remove the adhesive strip cover and pop that on the front (taking care to align it correctly).

Having used adhesive-based front cases before on other folding phones, I’m glad they included a replacement adhesive strip in the box, as these tend to come loose over time. The finished setup is nearly as thin and light as the (already thin and light) phone.

The case adds only 1.2 mm of thickness (when unfolded) and 27 grams of weight, which is among the lightest on the market. The cutouts for the power and volume buttons are aligned (and I much prefer using the actual buttons instead of the case covering the phone’s original buttons).

The hinge remains unprotected, as with most of these thin and light cases for foldables. Luckily, the phone doesn’t have glass on this exposed edge, but it is a trade-off between protection and size/weight. I have had more rugged cases for previous foldables that protect the hinge, and I didn’t like the extra material that has to stretch or fold awkwardly around it.

The camera hump is protected by a nearly triangular aluminum piece that includes a thermally conductive pad on the back of it to help cool the phone during strenuous use. I was worried that the design would snag on my pocket or bother me, but luckily, it was a non-issue in practice. It’s a nice spot for resting my finger when using the phone one-handed.

The color-changing dots on the back seem gimmicky because you can simply feel the back of the phone to gauge temperature, but they definitely add an eye-catching aesthetic. I can confirm that the dots turn orange/yellow under load (as shown in the picture above).

Cooling Performance

To test the cooling performance of the Aulumu SF8 Ultra-Slim Aramid Fiber Case for Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8, I ran a 3DMark Wild Life Extreme Stress Test, which maxes out the phone’s GPU and CPU for 20 minutes. The results were interesting, showing higher stability and a higher “lowest loop score,” but the cooling system eventually maxed out at the same temperature with and without the case.

My conclusion is that the thermal pad and aluminum heat sink can absorb some heat and lead to slightly longer performance degradation due to thermal throttling, but not enough to make it a primary factor in choosing this case over another. To meaningfully impact performance, you’d probably need an active cooling solution (or passive liquid or vapor chamber cooling), which would add bulk and weight to any case.

The Aulumu SF8 Ultra-Slim Aramid Fiber Case for Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 hits the sweet spot for anyone who wants more protection than going caseless without turning an already substantial folding phone into a brick. It is exceptionally thin and light, feels good in the hand, and the aramid fiber construction gives me more confidence carrying the Fold8 every day. I also like the aluminum camera surround, which adds protection without getting in the way.

I wouldn’t buy the SF8 specifically for its cooling capabilities. My testing suggests the thermal pad and aluminum can help briefly under sustained load, but they won’t transform the Fold8’s thermal performance. Anyone wanting maximum protection, especially for the hinge, should also consider a bulkier rugged case.

But if you want to preserve the Fold8’s relatively slim design while adding useful everyday protection, the SF8 makes a lot of sense. At $69.98, it isn’t cheap, but neither is repairing a folding phone.
