The Qosmio Is Here! Let’s Take A Look

What the heck is a Qosmio, you ask? Well, we will just have to open this giant black box I received to find out.

Follow me past the link and we can take a much closer look at the contents of this mysterious box.

Of course, Qosmio is the latest laptop computer from Toshiba. And this one is the Qosmio G45-AV690. Designed for high definition entertainment, it features an HD-DVD and includes ATI TV Wonder Digital Cable Tuner. We’ll have some fun playing with that.

In this photo, the small, skinny iten in the foreground is the Qosmio laptop. The large box behind it is the accessories. Here they are coming out of the box, and we can just dispose of those large pieces of styrafoam packing material.

Let’s go ahead and see what we have here.

We’ll start with that black accessories box. This has got to be one of the biggest accessory boxes I have ever seen. And here is why:
Inside this inner box, we will find the digital cable tuner

Along with assorted cables, remotes, and other accessories

Like I said. I think we will have some fun playing with this. )

Moving back to the main accessory box, we find pretty much everything you would expect…

an assortment of manuals…

and cables.

OK. That is going to bring us back around to the main attraction.

The Qosmio comes with a nice black cloth wrapped around the screen.

And here is the underside. No, we are not one of those sites who will dissect this thing for you.

Ok. I think I have kept you in suspense long enough.

Of course, the battery did not come charged, so I had to plug it in to get things going.

And it is booting…all lit up like a Christmas tree.

Obviously, that is the keyboard in the middle. On the left is the volume wheel and power button. On the right are the DVD controls. On either side, at the back of the face are the Harmon Kardon speakers. Near the front, you can see the touchpad mouse in amongst all of the ads. Between the mouse buttons is the fingerprint reader. In front of that are the status lights. Those blue lights in the back are the function buttons for media center.

Rounding out the laptop is the High Definition DVD/RW.

And, of course, the 17 inch monitor.

My initial impression of this laptop is that it is the anti-MacBook Air. Where the Air is ultra-skinny, light, and portable while lacking in many key features; the Toshiba Qosmio includes every feature you can imagine (did I mention the 2 GB of RAM, PCMCIA slot, Express slot, multiple USB and other ports, NVIDIA Geoforce 8600M GT graphics engine, dual 160 GB hard drives, Intel Core 2 Duo processor, and…well, you get the point). On the other hand, weighing in at over 10 pounds, this is anything but small, light, and portable.

Well, as you can see, I have my work cut out for me. I have this laptop for right around a month, and I have not even begun to look at all it can do. So, stay tuned. I plan to spend as much of February as possible inspecting every nook and cranny of this laptop. I’ll kick the tires. Heck, I’ll even kick the tires for you. Have a question about the Qosmio? Ask away and I will try to cover it in my review. There is plenty more coming on this one, so keep watching this space later in February for my complete review.

Qosmio does not exactly roll of the tongue, and I can’t tell you how many times I misspelled it before I finished that post. )I actually looked up the word Qosmio to see where it came from. And I can honestly tell you that I have no clue.Doug
