The Speck GeoMetric case for the iPhone is the first case I’ve come across with a textured, dimensional pattern which offers a very unique feel in your hand. Made from the ever-popular TPU (themorplastic polyurethane) the case soft and flexible but stays form fitting just enough the hug the lines of the iPhone perfectly.
The GeoMetric is currently available in one color, what Speck calls “DeathRock Black.” Someday I’ll have to ask Speck who comes up with the interesting names they choose for their colors. Speck doesn’t include a screen shield with the GeoMetric. If you desire screen protection their Shield View for the iPhone 4 should be available soon.
Speck recommends inserting the bottom portion of the iPhone 4 into the GeoMetric first and the wrapping the top corners and front around the iPhone 4. The case features a mixed pattern of triangles on the back. Some are matte, some shiny, and they cover the back of the case in no particular order.
What’s really unique about the GeoMetric is the way that some of these triangles are raised. When resting in your hand the case offers a good grip from the elevated textures.
The GeoMetric features all the proper cut outs right where you’d expect them to be. The back features a nice sized cutout for the camera and LED flash.
The left side features covered volume buttons that offer good feedback when pressed and a cutout for the vibrate switch which leaves it easily accessible.
Along the top the headset jack and secondary microphone get their own cutout and the sleep/awake button gets covered.
On the bottom of the case the speaker, microphone and 30-pin dock connector all have their own cutouts.
The GeoMetic does offer a decent amount of “lay-on-the-table” design so you can rest easy when you’ve placed your phone down onto a flat surface screen first. (Note: if the fit doesn’t look perfect in the image below it’s because I had a full body skin on the back of my iPhone when this picture was taken. I think the case best fits without a back skin.)
The ability to safely lay down the phone screen first is important with this case. Because of the raised pattern on the back when you lay it down screen up the case does tend to slide around slippery surfaces.
TPU cases are a dime a dozen these days but I’ve yet to see one that’s as unique as the Speck GeoMetric. This case breaks away from the plain colored TPU cases and offers a cool textured pattern that not only looks good but serves as additional grip insuring that your phone stays in your hand.
