I spent a week in Israel this past summer and pretty much everywhere we went, my friends Robyn, Menachem and I took a selfie and shared it on social media. (If there is more than one person is it called an “Us-ie?” just wondering…) I really wish we had the Satechi Smart Selfie Extension Arm with us at the time! The extension arm would have allowed us the flexibility to hold the smartphone up to three feet away from us. The result would have been pictures that also included some of the background in each of the locations. In other words the extension arm would have let us take some better pictures than this…

Satechi Smart Selfie Extension Arm

The Smart Selfie Extension Arm is more than a simple smartphone holder on an extendable arm. Thanks to some cool Bluetooth technology built into the handle this is truly a smart Smart Selfie Extension Arm.

Satechi explains:

The Satechi Smart Selfie Extension Arm lets you easily take photos of yourself when alone and allows you to include yourself in group photos. Extending the Smart Selfie positions your smartphone up to 3 feet away from you to create a wide viewing angle. Quicker than setting up a tripod and waiting for a camera timer to go off, simply press a button on the Smart Selfie to take instant photos of yourself anytime, anywhere!

The company describes the Satechi Smart Selfie Extension Arm as “Compact and Portable.” It is! When closed the extension arm is just 9.6″. That means it is small enough to slip into most bags. (They also note that it can also be attached “via the included wrist strap to a belt loop or backpack strap” honestly unless you want someone to make fun of you please don.t!) Extended the arm is over 3′ long! And since it weighs only 5.6 ounces the Smart Selfie is light enough to carry pretty much anywhere. The light weight also means it is easy to operate with one hand. The adjustable ball joint at the end can rotate a full allows for 360-degree rotation as well as tilting to various angles for self-portraits, landscape views, capturing pictures over crowds, and various screen orientations.

It is unsurprising that the Satechi Smart Selfie Extension Arm connects to your smartphone via Bluetooth. That way it allows you to snap your picture with the same hand that is holding the Smart Selfie. What I did not expect was the fact that it can easily toggle between connecting to iOS or Android phones.

Easily power the Smart Selfie, switch between iOS and Android mode, press Pairing Mode to connect via Bluetooth, then take a photo with your thumb.

The smartphone holder can get a good grip on phones up to up to 3.3 inches wide. Rubber grips protect the device from scratches and lets you feel secure it isn’t going anywhere you don’t want it to go. The handle is made from hard plastic but is sharpened in a manner that is comfortable to hold for an extended period of time. The wrist strap adds a bit of extra security.

Satechi does note on the site that, “There is a re-connection issue with the Samsung Galaxy S3, S4, S5, Note.” They are currently working to resolve this issue.

In all, the Satechi Smart Selfie Extension Arm is a convenient way to take selfies. More importantly, it lets you get your smartphone camera up and away from you and then trigger the shutter remotely. This is, of course, useful for much more than narcissistic pictures of you doing mundane things! After all, there are much better things to photograph than… This…
