The Lowdown

Land of Dough creates gorgeous, sustainable, all-natural play dough that my kids went crazy for. On the surface, they’re just beautifully packaged, and kids can’t wait to get their hands on them, but if you dig deeper, you’ll find a whole lot more to love.

Overall
4.5

Pros

  • Beautiful designs
  • Great texture
  • Pleasant aroma
  • Reusable packaging
  • Inclusion of scoop
  • All natural ingredients and compostable glitter

Cons

  • Leaves an oily residue
  • Not safe for those with nut allergies due to the almond oil ingredient — I would recommend Land of Dough have larger disclaimers on their website and packaging regarding this

There were few things more exciting when I was a kid than a fresh jar of play dough. Land of Dough has brought that feeling to the next level with their beautifully designed, all-natural dough cups that are themed and include every kid’s favorite, glitter. These layered dough cups start at $12, and we think they’re worth every penny.

Our immediate reaction was to marvel at the enchanting designs, but our kids were so itching to dig in. Just as promised, the dough was incredibly soft and felt really great in our hands. This lead to a very relaxing experience. As you’d expect, once all the different colored layers are mixed, the dough becomes a solid color. What’s nice is Land of Dough will actually tell you, either on their website or on the bottom of the package, what color you can expect once it’s all mixed up.

Land of Dough

While the full ingredient list is understandably proprietary, Land of Dough will say that its ingredients are all-natural and non-synthetic. Some of the ingredients they do list include: “all-natural dough and colors, almond oil, compostable glitters, and calming essential oils.”

You should note that the Land of Dough packaging mentions that their dough includes wheat and almond oil, so keep in mind that Land of Dough is not safe for people with nut allergies due to the almond oil. However, this is fairly easy to miss, and I would recommend Land of Dough increase the size of their allergy warning.

Land of Dough

The dough seemed to leave an oily residue on our hands and the table after playing with it, likely related to the almond oil or another ingredient. That said, it washed off easily and did not affect our enjoyment of the dough. While playing with the dough, we noticed the calming scent, which we enjoyed a lot more than the scent than the mass-produced play dough market leader has. Land of Dough says they crafted their signature scent using a blend of chamomile, lemongrass, and lavender essential oils. It’s a really nice touch to an already great product.

Land of Dough sells simpler designs at $12 and the more complex designs as “Luxe Cups” at $15; each of those comes with a 7-ounce container of dough. There are some really cool designs at their entry price point, like the “Super Shark” pictured in our review as well as the “Space Galaxy” or “Unicorn Dream.” Their Luxe Cups are also really neat, like the “Over the Rainbow” in our review or the “Planet Earth” design.

They also offer $25 kits that include two 5-ounce rolls of dough and different wooden dough-play accessories depending on the kit ordered.

Land of Dough

For those who wonder how long the dough will last, Land of Dough mentions that unopened products will last over a year. Once the dough has been opened, you can have more than two hours of playtime before you’ll want to rehydrate the dough. To rehydrate, you can add a damp paper towel to the dough in its sealed container overnight, and the dough will be ready for play again the next day. They recommend storing the dough in its container with the lid on when you’re not playing with it.

If you come up with a creation that you want to preserve, you can allow the dough to harden by leaving it out to dry in the open air; thinner designs should harden overnight, but thicker ones might take a while longer to dry out fully.

Land of Dough

We had a great time with Land of Dough’s all-natural play dough, and we’d absolutely recommend it to anyone looking for fun, screen-free activities for their kids aged three and up. Our kids love hands-on activities, and Land of Dough was perfect for them.

Land of Dough prices range from $12 to 15, or they have kits with dough and dough-play accessories for $25; all are available directly from the manufacturer and other retailers.
