Cons

One of the first upgrades my 2017 Jeep Wrangler got was a replacement for the stock radio. Since this is my vehicle and a personal build, I installed a Pioneer touchscreen stereo with Android Auto connectivity. Still, the wired connection was buggy at best and a real pain to operate. I found AAWireless on Indigogo, and I now have a real upgrade.

AAWireless is a device that enables a wireless connection with Android Auto. While I could use Bluetooth wirelessly to play audio or use the phone, Android Auto would not connect. Using a Bluetooth connection meant having none of the app options or using maps on my stereo’s display.

I decided to back the AAWireless campaign after being continually annoyed by the wired connection issues I was having; for instance, if I hit a bump, the Android Auto would disconnect and reconnect, and it was always super slow. Using the stereo’s touchscreen was also slow and hit or miss. My assumption was that the issue was with the head unit or the USB-C cable I had coming from its back.

I backed the AAWireless Indiegogo campaign in July 2021, when it had an expected delivery date in October 2021. Due to the popularity with backers and all of the global supply chain issues from the pandemic, I didn’t receive my unit until January 2022.

The wait time was a slight annoyance, but the AAWireless team was communicative, putting out several updates on shipping times as well as explaining some of the issues they were having.

The packaging is super simple and includes the AAWireless device and a 20″ braided USB-C cable. The unit is surprisingly small, which I am happy with; it is easily hidden, tucked into my Jeep’s console net.

A companion app walks you through the AAWireless setup, which only takes a couple of minutes and is the same as connecting to any Bluetooth stereo. Since I already had a cable coming through my dash from the stereo, I could connect immediately.

To use the AAWireless, you will need to make sure your stereo is Android Auto compatible, and you can use a USB connection to either the front or back of the head unit.

The magic comes after the device is connected to your phone. Android Auto fired up on my phone in seconds and connected to the stereo. Since I use Waze when I drive, it automatically popped up with my last played audio. It was seamless and a lot faster than I had anticipated.

My Android Auto experience immediately took a turn for the better, and I have not had a disconnection or reset from my phone since I started using AAWireless. It is a total game-changer to simply start up my Jeep and be able to drive off without messing with wires or even connecting; it just works! My audio is perfect, and even the touchscreen on my stereo works faster and better.

While original backers had to wait longer than expected due to supply chain issues, they are promising a March shipment for anyone who purchases now.
