The Lowdown

The Scosche BoomCan MS is a fun little 3W speaker that produces a bigger and richer sound than just about any smartphone’s built-in speakers. Also able to be attached to any metal surface, I particularly like that when connected to an iPhone’s MagSafe ring, the BoomCan MS becomes a functional phone stand.

Pros

  • Small and solidly built
  • USB-C port is protected by a rubber cover when not needed
  • IP67 dust and water resistance rating
  • Easy to set up and use
  • Connects magnetically to iPhone with MagSafe or any metallic surface
  • The speaker can also be used with any Bluetooth-enabled audio source
  • Can be paired with a second Scosche BoomCan MS for stereo sound

Cons

  • Small 3W speaker means the sound is louder than your phone on its own, but you shouldn’t expect anything too impressive
  • No volume controls are on the speaker itself
  • Creating a stereo pair will cost you just under $100, and there are better portable speaker options when you start talking about that kind of money (albeit not as cute or handy)

The Scosche BoomCan MS is a powerful Bluetooth speaker designed specifically to work with Apple’s MagSafe, but it also works fine with any Bluetooth-enabled device. As small as it is, the 3W BoomCanMS delivers bigger sound than your phone’s speaker can; it’s also small enough to go anywhere and doubles as a phone kickstand. Is Scosche on to something here?

The Scosche BoomCan MS is available in either white or black.

Measuring just under 2 1/2″ in diameter, the speaker is small, solidly built, and easy to use.

The Scosche BoomCan MS delivers up to five hours of playback per charge, and it has an iP67-rated waterproof and dustproof design, so it is safe to use anywhere you would usually use your smartphone.

The Scosche BoomCan MS ships with a USB-C charging cable.

The main body is made from white or black plastic, while the surface is an audio-friendly fabric that protects the small, 3W speaker inside.

On one side of the speaker, there is a USB-C port. It’s covered by a rubber cap that keeps the port dust and dirt-free.

On the other side, a power/pairing button is made from the same rubber material as the USB-C port cover. A small power indicator light sits beneath the button.

The bottom of the Scosche BoomCan MS has a rubber center that keeps the hard plastic of the speaker from coming into direct contact with your phone. The plastic ring surrounding the rubber houses a magnet.

When used with a MagSafe-enabled iPhone, the Scosche BoomCan MS securely clips onto the phone’s back. That means the sound is firing away from you, yet it is still a significant improvement over the phone’s built-in speaker.

When connected to an iPhone’s MagSafe, the speaker’s positioning means it can double as a kickstand for hands-free viewing.

The Scosche BoomCan MS connects to your mobile device via Bluetooth 5.3. Since the review sample arrived, I’ve used it quite a bit, and the connection is rock solid.

You can even use two BoomCans together to create a stereo pair. Here’s the thing, though, the BoomCan costs$49.99. To make a stereo pair, you’ll have to spend $100. For the same $100, you would get a much larger and more powerful speaker

Scosche BoomCan MS Features:

The Scosche BoomCan MS is an interesting gadget. I like that it takes advantage of the iPhone’s MagSafe and, when attached, doubles as a hands-free kickstand.

I also like that the magnets built into the speaker mean you can fix it to any magnet-friendly metal. The sound is fine, but you’ll have to remember that the Scosche BoomCan MS is only a 3W speaker.

If you expect something loud that will surround you with sound, this isn’t the speaker for you. But, thanks to its small size and solid build, it’s an easy way to have a speaker at hand that will improve upon the iPhone’s built-in speakers.

It would be nice if the Scosche BoomCan MS had volume controls, but since the speaker is designed to be connected to your phone, you really don’t need them.

The Scosche BoomCan MS sells for $49.99; it is available directly from the manufacturer.
