Do you know what processor is powering your smartphone? Chances are that you don’t, and that’s okay, but I find processors fascinating because they control everything from your phone’s responsiveness to how many megapixels the cameras on your phone can be. With the new MediaTek Dimensity 1080 5G chipset, we’re promised upgraded camera features and a performance bump compared to its predecessor, last year’s Dimensity 920.
The MediaTek Dimensity 920 is a highly capable processor; it powered the realme 9 Pro+ that I wrote about earlier this year, as well as other mid-range smartphones by realme, vivo, Xiaomi, and Infinix. Able to handle displays with adaptive refresh rates, support up to four cameras (including smartphones with 108MP main cameras), boost performance, provide advanced connectivity, and give you smoother gaming, the Dimensity 920 remains a solid option.
But time and MediaTek wait for no one, and now we have the Dimensity 1080; it features an upgraded octa-core CPU that can operate at up to 2.6GHz with an Arm Mali-G68 GPU that promises faster performance when you’re gaming, browsing, or streaming media. This tiny little 6nm chipset also comes with plenty of power-saving magic to give you longer smartphone battery life.

Smartphones with the MediaTek Dimensity 1080 will be able to have up to a 200-megapixel main camera as well as a hardware-accelerated HDR video recording engine that can process up to 4K resolution in all lighting situations.
HyperEngine 3.0 will provide gaming enhancements like fast performance and solid connectivity, and the integrated AI processing unit 3.0 will make the chip even more power efficient. On top of that, the MediaTek Dimensity 1080 will support sub-6GHz 5G networks and Wi-Fi 6 connectivity for smooth and uninterrupted gaming.
The Dimensity 1080 will start showing up in smartphones late this year; we’ll be sure to point out the models powered by it as they are reviewed.
