Raina and I have used a Withings Smart Scale for the last few years. It’s an older, basic model, but it gets the job done. Now the company has released its latest smart scale, the Body Smart; this is certainly not the kind of scale that any of us grew up with!
The Withings Body Smart is the latest addition to the company’s line of smart scales. It has Withings’ Precision Technology that “combines multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), precision weight sensors, and advanced algorithms.
These, in turn, offer insights and provide health analysis so you can take better care of yourself. And while this sub-$100 scale might be considered an entry-level smart scale, it packs impressive features.
BIA is a fascinating technology that goes far beyond what “basic” scales can offer. As the company explains it,
BIA works by sending a small electrical signal through the body, which measures the resistance and reactance of body tissues to the current. The more frequencies used, the more complete and accurate the picture of body health can be created.
Multifrequency BIA and advanced algorithms enable Withings to dig deeper into body composition, expanding from measuring fat, muscle mass, and water weight percentage to analyzing visceral fat and other advanced body metrics.
The Withings Body Smart also measures Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), or the number of calories burned at rest, and “visceral fat,” the fat surrounding internal organs. Visceral fat has been linked to an increased risk of heart disease and diabetes, and while the scale can’t reduce fat, having more information about one’s health can help lead to better life choices.
The Withings Body Smart features a color display and a new Eyes Closed Mode, which lets people start the day without the possibility of seeing a number on the display that is upsetting. It sends weight and body information directly to the Withings app without showing it on the scale’s display.
Instead of the user’s weight, the display shows the weather, the air quality, or morning affirmations. Then, users can access all their information via the app when they want to.
