The video gaming network Raptr, which tracks over 10 million game users and their gameplay hours and achievements,  has named their “Most Played Games of 2012” in eight categories. These winners are complimented by a detailed reports with several interesting trends, facts, and fascinations in the video game world…and the winners (except for most played game)  are:

Last year’s winners were:

Most Played Shooter – Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (Activision)

Most Played RPG – The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (Bethesda Softworks)

Most Played Open-World Game – Batman: Arkham City (Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment)

Most Played Sports Game – FIFA Soccer 12 (EA Sports)

Most Played Social Game – The Sims Social (EA Play)

Most Played New IP – L.A. Noire (Rockstar)

Most Successful Paid to Free-to-Play Game – DC Universe Online (Sony Online Entertainment)

Unfortunately, we did not see expanded categories like Most Played Independent Game and Most Played Game Produced Below Five Million Dollars.

Highlights from the report include:

This year’s results point out notable gameplay trends, particularly how gamers are spending time playing their favorite games,” said Dennis Fong, CEO of Raptr. “We’re seeing more time invested in games that constantly introduce new content and other community engagement activities, from console titles like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Portal 2 to MOBAs like League of Legends.
