Earlier this year, the “hot rodders” over at the Street and Racing Technology group of Chrysler expanded its “Core SRT” strategy to Dodge Challenger and Chrysler 300 models. The Core program adds exclusive content to the performance versions of these vehicles, designed and built with the “back-to-basics” performance driving enthusiast in mind. Recently we tested the 300 SRT8 Core model.
At the heart and soul of all SRT models from the Chrysler Group is a big, beefy HEMI-based engine cranking out heaps of power – in this case 470 horsepower and 470 lb. ft. of torque and capable of getting the big sedan 0-60 mph in under 5 seconds and seeing a top speed of 175 mph. Not bad for the big luxury yacht of the Chrysler lineup.
The Core package brings special 6.4L badging to the front fenders of the 300 SRT8 along with 20-inch cast aluminum wheels with black painted pockets and standard black Brembo brake calipers.
Inside the new Core model is black seating surfaces featuring new “Ballistic” cloth inserts as used in the SRT Viper with the inserts flanked by black “Axel” cloth bolsters and door bolster inserts. Throughout the new interior are various matte carbon and piano black accent pieces.
An improved adaptive damping suspension system has been added and includes three selectable modes tuned specifically for this vehicle: Auto, Sport and Track. The first two modes will tackle all of your public roadway handling requirements with Track mode being reserved for those times you find yourself lucky enough to push the 300 SRT8 to the limits.
Also new is a standard launch control system that will help maximize straight-line acceleration. Launch control holds the engine at optimal launch rpm while the brake is applied and when released it utilizes engine torque management to control wheelslip for maximum acceleration (but only up to 62 mph).
Base MSRP for the Chrysler 300 SRT8 Core model is $43,995 with this tester arriving at $45,395. Fuel economy figures from the big Elephant motor are 14 mpg city and 23 mpg highway.
Just like those “good old days,” Chrysler offers a big car that makes big power for big driving excitement, all you gotta do is drop the bucks and then drop the hammer.
