The Open Automotive Alliance was announced this week as a partnership initially between Audi, GM, Google, Honda, Hyundai and NVIDIA to work together to advance integration of the Android platform into the automotive environment. The announcement boasts the OAA being dedicated to a common platform to drive innovation and make technology in the car safer and more intuitive.

With more than one billion Android devices activated to date, the Alliance says it is aimed at accelerating auto innovation with an approach that offers openness, customization and scale. They say the new open development model and common platform will allow automakers to more easily bring the latest technology to its their drivers and create new opportunities for developers to reach drivers and passengers in a safe and scalable way.

Consumers should begin to see results of this newly formed group some time this year.
