PlayStation Classic Is a Holiday Flop, Gets a 40% Price Cut!

Back in September when we posted the announcement of Sony’s PlayStation Classic, there was a load of enthusiasm – which is easy to understand when you look back through the press release and list of included games.

PlayStation Classic comes with 20 preloaded games
Includes Final Fantasy VII; Jumping Flash; Ridge Racer Type 4; Tekken 3; Wild Arms; Battle Arena Toshinden; Cool Boarders 2; Destruction Derby; Grand Theft Auto; Intelligent Qube; Metal Gear Solid; Mr. Driller.

As well as OddWorld; Persona; Rayman; Syphon Filter; Resident Evil: Director’s Cut; Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo; Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six; Twisted Metal. There are also two wired controllers, a virtual memory card and an HDMI cable included.

PlayStation Classic console
A perfect console for retro-loving fans and for a new generation wanting to experience the dawn of PlayStation for the first time.

PlayStation Classic design
The same famous logo, button layout, and outer packaging, but this mini console is approximately 45% smaller than the original PlayStation and includes an HDMI cable to connect directly to a TV.

Two wired controllers
Enable local multiplayer showdowns.

Virtual memory card
Ensures vital game saves.

And for many gamers the thought was simple – one of the greatest consoles with one of the greatest libraries, what could go wrong?!? Unfortunately, the final product ended up … well, pretty awful. One review called it “Retro Done Wrong”, another said “It just kinda sucks”, and as for the game choices one noted “This is a “classic” machine that doesn’t have a Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, or Tomb Raider game. For any gamer who remembers the late ’90s, that’s absurd.” And whereas Nintendo’s classics came with loads of options, Sony’s take is incredibly bare-bones for no good reason.

Well – good news for those of us who waited! Now you can get the PlayStation Classic for $55-60, a 40% discount off the launch price! It is still a mediocre system, but with the fun hardware and some great games, you might find it worthwhile!

Grab the deals at Best Buy, Amazon, NewEgg and GameStop – and I am sure also a bunch of other places! And if you’ve played this system – let us know what you think!
