The Brown Buffalo has a well-earned reputation for building tough, supremely functional bags. I fell in love with their Conceal Waistpack as my go-to bag for minimalist EDC last year, and now I’m testing their flagship product. Meet the legendary Brown Buffalo Conceal Pack 21L, an award-winning pack with a storied history in the carry community for its versatility and robustness. From impeccable construction to dialed-in usability, this bag stands on business as a multitasking beast that will flow seamlessly from work to travel to more rugged adventures. Is it the perfect park for you? Let’s learn more!

Style, Materials & Build
The Brown Buffalo Conceal Pack 21L presents with a stoic, refined profile. Clean lines and tight finishing reinforce the bag’s personality as a mission-focused carryall, but some contouring in the corners keeps it from being too utilitarian and boxy. The style translates seamlessly from office to casual environments without looking out of place in either situation.

The side profile brings more of the same. You’ve got a couple of attachment loops that sit tight against the bag, but no elaborate ornamentation or flourishes that break the clean lines. The bag doesn’t taper at the top, so you’ve got the full width and height to play with if you’re packing for travel.

The external colorway on my tester is Black 1050D Cordura, but other fabrics and patterns are available, including a subdued black multicam option, a ranger green variant, and a technical black-on-black grid pattern. There are also some variants in base fabrics with these options.
Open this bag, and you’ll get a surprise pop of bright orange from the sailcloth interior, which is excellent for visibility when you’re digging around for your stuff.

The build on the Brown Buffalo Conceal Pack 21L features curated materials and hardware everywhere you look. The Cordura exterior and sailcloth liner are combined with multiple layers of water-resistant coating to provide IPX4 water resistance. High-performance YKK zips are used inside and out. The hardware is a combination of metal & chunky plastic in the buckles, attachment points, and D-rings.
The finishing is outstanding, with no misplaced seam or stitch to be found. There’s extra reinforcement at all the key stress points, and thoughtful details like elastic loops to contain extra strapping. Check out the gallery below for some close-up examples of the fit and finish details.
The build quality is on par with some of the best bags I’ve handled over the years, including products from legends like Mission Workshop, Tom Bihn, GRK, and WaterField. You feel the quality as you handle it, beat on it, and toss it around.
One of the things that surprised me about this bag is that it weighs a lean 2.9 pounds. Given the size of the pack and feel of the build, it carries much lighter than I expected.
Sizing, Layout & Organization
The Brown Buffalo Conceal Pack 21L is committed to making every square inch of space in the build usable. At 19.5” tall by 12” wide by 6” deep, the sizing is a little deceptive. It carries like a mid-size pack but can fit more stuff than many larger packs I’ve tested thanks to its efficient design.
We’ll start our layout journey with a massive pocket in the front panel. A protected side zip opens to the space, which runs the width and height of the front face. While there is a key hook that hangs from the top of the space, you won’t find any additional built-in organization here. This speaks to the design philosophy used throughout this bag. The back panel is made of a Velcro material that will take Velcro-backed accessories. You can customize it with admin panels made by The Brown Buffalo, bring your own add-ons, or leave the space wide open.

Rotating around to the padded back panel, you’ll find a 13.5” dual-zip access that opens up to a padded laptop compartment. The Brown Buffalo states that this space will accommodate up to a 15” MacBook Pro, but a 16” fits just fine with a little wiggling to get it up in there. The same soft Velcro liner allows for admin attachments if you don’t want your laptop back there.

The star of the show is the main compartment. Dual zips allow for a full clamshell opening so that you can do lay-flat packing for travel. The same Velcro lining we’ve seen on the exterior pockets is used here, providing additional placement options for admin accessories or a full-size laptop sleeve, which you can add to your purchase.

The Brown Buffalo Conceal Pack 21L doesn’t have external water bottle pockets, but the front panel has two large tubular drop pockets that can hold big hydration bottles or similar items. The top of this panel also has a generous zip pocket that is made with a heavy-duty tight mesh for collecting all your assorted small bits. These pockets collapse completely if you want to use the whole interior for packing clothes and gear.

Additional Features
The Brown Buffalo Conceal Pack 21L has a few extra design features worth noting. The first is the key leash in the front pocket. It’s a relatively short leash so that it doesn’t interfere with your other gear, and uses a nicely designed clip that can handle several rings for additional quick-grab items if needed.

Four Hypalon latch points are located on the sides of the bag for attaching additional items. There’s also a clever little ring strap that comes with the bag. You can pop that button loose to attach it anywhere on the bag, giving you an extra attachment point. This loop is super useful for quick attachments like sunglass cases, work badges, etc. I’d love to get my hands on more of these for other uses.

The back panel includes a simple luggage pass-through strap for chugging through airports.

How Does It Carry?
The Brown Buffalo Conceal Pack 21L uses lightweight, breathable padding on both the undersides of the shoulder straps and the back panel. It feels good, has plenty of cushion, and feels light despite a bit of thickness in the straps. There’s plenty of play on the shoulder straps for different body types. I am 5’10” and 225 pounds for reference in the sizing photos below.

There’s an adjustable, removable sternum strap included with the Brown Buffalo Conceal Pack 21L that can be slid up & down the shoulder strap rails to accommodate different chest sizes. You’ll also see two D-rings in the photo below for hanging additional gear; two more D-rings are at the base of the shoulder straps, as you’ll see in some of the other pictures, if you want to hang something low, like a hydration bottle.

I feel that the bag works best when you cinch it up high & tight. It does have a wide profile as you can see below, but it carries pretty tight to the back despite the 6″depth. If I’m cruising through busy streets or crowded train stations, I’m not worried about knocking people over.

The Brown Buffalo Conceal Pack 21L’s padding in the back panel and shoulder pads is very nice to work with. We had some 100-degree days recently here in Philadelphia, and I found the bag to be very comfortable for long-ish walks in the heat. The padding also settles in nicely for extra-heavy loadouts when I’m carrying all of my work gear plus extras like a tablet, a packed lunch, etc.

The top handle is just about perfect in my opinion. There’s plenty of space to get your hands under there, and enough meat on the handle for comfortable carry if you need to drag it around for a bit.
The Bag in Use
The Brown Buffalo Conceal is built around simple and flexible usability that, in my opinion, gets better as you adapt to the open design philosophy. That monstrous front panel pocket, for example, can be a gaping cavern if you just want to throw all your stuff in there. I’ve added a rugged sunglasses case here and a velcro admin panel that allow me to leverage all the vertical space for more room to stash my gear for travel.

If I were doing a work gig, I could pull all of that stuff out, and the Brown Buffalo Conceal Pack 21L’s front pocket will easily fit my 12.9″ iPad Pro with the Smart Keyboard case.

When I am setting up for work, I also add two Velcro admin panels from other bags to the top portion of the back panel in the main compartment. One is a pocket with a lid where I keep my wallet, and the other has elastic straps for accessories.

This then gives me a mobile workstation I can access at the office. The Brown Buffalo Canceal Pack 21L stands on its own, so I can just unzip the top third of the bag to get to my stuff!

The Brown Buffalo makes several velcro panels (called “Mods”) for use in interior and exterior spaces. These include loops, slots, and pockets for organizing your gear in different ways and are sized for the bag. There’s also an internal laptop sleeve if you want your laptop (or a second laptop) in the main compartment. The price points seem very reasonable ($30-$40). If you’re a one-bagger, I think they are worth the investment, as they let you quickly reconfigure the bag for different adventures.
I’ve found that my 16″ MacBook Pro fits fine in the rear laptop compartment, but you do have to shimmy it in there with the 13.5″ opening. You kind of have to tuck it up into the top, then slip it in, but there’s plenty of room once it’s in there. An extra 0.5″ of travel in the zips would do the trick. Anything smaller will fit just fine, and you have multiple options for stashing a smaller laptop like a 13″ iPad.

The Brown Buffalo Conceal Pack 21L’s built-in interior admin panels are great. That zip pocket is generous enough to accommodate a bunch of little stuff with clear visibility. This big hydration bottle pockets will easily take a 32-ounce Nalgene bottle; my 18-ounce Yeti swims in one of them. You could also pack those deep with stuff like rolled-up t-shirts or a pair of slim shoes (depending on your size).

The lay-flat fully open clamshell design is wonderful for travel packing. I like that this sets up three different zones for your stuff: the big front panel pocket for quick-access gear, the rear laptop pocket for your computer or tablet, and the fully packable interior for the stuff you need when you get to your destination.
Best and Worst Use Cases
The Brown Buffalo Conceal Pack 21L is an ideal solution for one-baggers who want one solution for work, for travel, and casual weekend use. You’ve got configurable options here that let the bag adapt easily to different scenarios, with the addition of some add-on admin panels or packing cubes. Its bomb-proof build makes it a bag that you can travel with (or commute with) in confidence. It will take a beating and still keep your gear safe & dry.
I personally love the bag as a mobile office setup. I tend not to be minimalist in my work carry, requiring a bunch of stuff in addition to my laptop, like headphones, notebooks, a packed lunch, an iPad, etc. The 21L size here not only gives me plenty of room for all of that, but also lets me stash a light jacket or other items with plenty of room to spare. The self-standing feature makes it easy to set up in a corner where I can go grab my stuff as I need it. I believe I will be investing in some additional Brown Buffalo mod accessories to organize my smaller stuff for that purpose.
If you like big accessible spaces in your bags, you will love the Brown Buffalo Conceal Pack 21L’s design. The usability is dialed in for quick & easy access to every square inch of the bag, with generous pockets that offer plenty of flexibility for tossing your stuff in. Big chunky zippers with clean travel make getting in and out of all the pockets quick & easy.
Micro-organizers will probably struggle with this design unless you add in some additional accessories. While every pocket is generous, there’s not a lot of sub-organization to keep your stuff separated. If you’re not interested in customizing your carry, this may not be the bag for you.
Finally, it is what I would consider a mid-sized pack that offers no compression options. If you’re a minimalist that travels with a laptop and the bare essentials, this bag may be more than you need.
Conclusion
I continue to be impressed with the stuff I have tested from The Brown Buffalo, and the Brown Buffalo Conceal Pack 21L is another outstanding product. You can feel the care that has been invested in every detail of this bag’s design. I’m also a huge fan of the flexible design philosophy that lets me adjust the configuration as my needs evolve. It’s a solid investment piece that will last a very long time.
The Brown Buffalo Conceal Pack 21L retails for $229 to $239 (depending on color choice); it is available directly from the manufacturer.
