The iPad took yet another step forward as an amazing productivity device this evening when DEVONthink To Go finally made its appearance in the App Store. DEVONthink is a Mac OS X database program that makes collecting, organizing and manipulating all sorts of files easy. As Devontechnologies explains-

Meet DEVONthink — designed to manage and keep in order all those disparate pieces of information so important to your work or studies. As you become more experienced with DEVONthink and its easy, intuitive interface you will quickly find more exciting ways of using your data.

DEVONthink stores your documents, scanned papers, email messages, notes, bookmarks, etc. in one place. Access live web pages seamlessly from within DEVONthink to review, extract further information.

Create RTF documents, edit them in full screen, and use smart templates to quickly add pre-styled documents. Clip data from other applications using drag-and-drop, services, or the Dock menu.

Annotate PDF documents using standard PDF annotations. Cross-reference documents. Edit images.

Search, classify and show relationships between your documents — automatically and language-independent, with the help of Artificial Intelligence.

Share your knowledge using the built-in interactive web interface on the local network, over the Internet, and access it from Macs, Windows-PCs, the iPhone, or the iPod touch.

It is remarkably powerful and always has a complete set of my documents in it for easy access. Unfortunately the only way to access those documents on your iPhone or iPad was through a web portal. Until tonight that is. Tonight DEVONthink To Go was released in the App Store. It has an introductory price of $14.99 and, to my mind, it is a bargain.

From DEVONtechnologies-

Pocket Your Documents- DEVONthink for Mac keeps your documents organized. But what about when you’re away from your keyboard? Put your documents in your pocket with DEVONthink To Go — the DEVONthink and DEVONnote companion for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch.

Knowledge You Can Touch- Browse, view, and search your documents with the touch of your finger. Create a new note or take a picture of important information and convert it to a searchable PDF*. Quickly label documents and flag them for later review. Use the ‘read’ status to use it for reading the news feeds you have archived in DEVONthink on the go.

Keep In Sync- You decide which databases and which groups and documents to synchronize with your device. DEVONthink To Go connects to its Mac counterpart via WiFi.

Here is a look at part of one of my databases in DEVONthink. (I recently separated the one database into three to make using it faster.)

To get ready to use DEVONthink To Go you move the folders you want into the special “Sync” category.

When you first fire up DEVONthink To Go you are presented with an empty database. You first need to pair the device with the Mac database you will be synching.

Tap the Sync button on the iPad and you will be presented with a choice of which computer to pair with.

If there is only one computer running DEVONthink you will simply need to tap it.

Input the four digit code that will pop up on your computer’s screen and you are ready.

If you are running more than one database choose which database or databases to sync.

With that it starts syncing. This is what it looks like on the iPad.

The setup and sync was about as easy and straightforward as I could ever hope. The sync process was far quicker than I expected and, within a few minutes the first batch of documents from my mac were on my iPad in an organized, easy to find and use manner.

Yes, I still use Evernote, but for organized documents that don’t change on a regular basis I find that DEVONthink is a better, faster, more powerful way to store and access my documents. With DEVONthink To Go I now have my entire folder of organized PDFs with me all the time. Good thing I went with the 64GB iPad!

DEVONthink is available in a number of versions with prices starting at $49.95 for Devonthink Personal and going up to $149.95 for DEVONthink Professional Office.
